We've been sitting in the waiting room for three hours and my nails are now nonexistent. "Regina, calm down honey," my mother says, placing her hand on my shaking knee.
"I'm trying," I lie. My knee continues to shake after she moves her hand and I continue to bite on my short nails. David and Mary Margaret are cuddled up on one of the rather large sofas and my mother and father sit beside me in separate chairs though their hands are still intertwined. I smile at them and move my eyes to the movement on the other side of the room. I shoot up as a man enters with a clipboard and a white coat; what a stereotypical thing of him to have with him.
"I'd like to talk to the family of Emma Swan-Nolan," he announces. I can't help but snort at this man's appearance. He's short and his blonde long hair is in a low ponytail, he also has a mustache that definitely brings out the fact that he's a man, otherwise he'd be an assumed high schooler.
Mary Margaret and David stand abruptly out of the love seat to stand taller than the doctor. "That's us," David says, placing his hands protectively on his wife's shoulders.
The short man eyes me and then turns his attention to the couple in front of him. "Would you like to go somewhere more private?" he asks, motioning towards the small room that the nurse brought them in earlier.
David turns to look around the waiting room -it's just us. No one else is here except for the occasional students that walk through the hallways and into the large door that reads: Employees only. He shakes his head, "No, we'd like to stay here."
The man nods, "Alright. I'm doctor Stinson, I'll be with your daughter the entire time she recovers. I-" Mary Margaret's eyes widen and she stops the man from speaking.
"Wait, does that mean she made it out of surgery?" Her voice is on the brink of cracking, yet it's filled with hope.
The man nods. "Yes, she was just brought out about ten minutes ago. My assistants are hooking her up to an IV and she is resting comfortably. She hasn't woken up yet, though."
"So how did surgery go?" I ask, crossing my arms.
His eyes fall to me. "It went quite well, she's definitely a survivor," he says, a smile forming on his face. My frown is now turned into a smile and I look back to my mother and father to find my mother smiling back at me and my father half passed out on the chair. I smirk at him and turn back to the doctor.
"So how long do you think it will be before she wakes up?" Mary Margaret asks, leaning into her husbands embrace.
"I don't know. It might be a few hours, it may be less, but I'm not for certain," he says, playing with his clipboard. Mary Margaret's face falls and he must catch it because he adds, "she is still allowed visitors. She just won't be awake." My face brightens and I hear my mother begin to wake up my father -luckily it's before he begins to snore.
I turn back to my chair and grab my purse and jacket off the back and wait for everyone else to grab their things so we can make our way to Emma's room.
As we make our way down the hallway, the pit in my stomach fills with regret. I should have never left her loft when her parents caught us. Why couldn't I have just been a little bit more mature with the subject? I curse myself inwardly as we find her room.
David slowly opens the door and I hear Mary Margaret cry out as she sees her daughter, weak and paler than usual. I look at Emma as we step into the private room; her long blonde locks are pulled back into a ponytail to keep her hair from scattering along her face. There's three slashes along her throat, probably from the glass in the windshield, that are slightly scabbing over. Tears leave my eyes as I lay my hand on her stone cold body. It's as if she's dead. The only thing that keeps me from collapsing is her steady heartbeat.
"She was hardly pulling through during the surgery," the doctor's voice causes me to jump and hold onto Emma's cold skin even tighter. "That's why she looks so terrible. I'm sure once she awakes we'll be able to get some color in her," Doctor Stinson says with a small sincere smile.
"She looks horrible," I whisper to my mother, who grabs my hand and clutches it, causing me to lose more tears.
"It's alright, she'll wake up soon, darling," she whispers, pulling me into her arms as I sob, ruining her blouse.
I feel the soft hand of Mary Margaret rubbing my back, causing me to pull away from my mother and embrace the small woman in my arms. "I'm sorry, I should have been with her. This is all my fault," I whisper.
She strokes my hair as she says, "It's alright sweetie. If anything, it's my fault. I let her go with Neal." I pull away, the sudden thought of Neal being in the accident as well pulling my attention. I wipe the tears from my eyes as I turn to the doctor.
"There was a man with her in the car, going by the name of Neal Cassidy. Do you have anything on him?" I ask, crossing my arms as everyone follows my gaze to the blonde man.
He nods his head. "Mr. Cassidy was release about an hour ago. He too was in the crash but he didn't have any severe damage done. A few scrapes and cuts but that's about it," he says. His words make me bite down hard on my tongue and make me want to scream.
I squint my eyes at him, pressing my fingers deep into my arms. "So you're telling me, that the man who got her into this mess left with only a few cuts?" I ask. My nostrils are flaring and steam is coming out of my ears as my face turns red.
"That is correct, yes."
I turn to David. "Where's your gun?" I ask, beginning to walk out of the hospital room. It's not on him, so it must be in the car.
My mother along with David run after me, pulling me back, stopping me from running. "Regina, you need to breathe," David says, placing his hand on my arm.
"No! I'm gonna kill him! I'm gonna kill him! Please! Just let me kill him!" I break down in tears as my mother holds me in her arms.
"Don't worry, I'm way ahead of you," David says, causing me to turn around and my eyes to widen. "Let's 'kill' him together."
