Afaaf

The young doctor sitting before me scrutinized me under her sharp eyes. The dark lipstick on her lips almost blinding my eyes.

" Now relax, take a deep breath." She unattached the blood pressure machine from my arm and took the reading before jotting it down in her notepad. Leaning on her elbows, she glanced at my mother before looking back at me.

" Is there some sort of stress you're feeling these days?" She asked.

" Just some family problem. But she has fever since a few days now. On and off." The woman sitting besides me interjected.

Making the doctor nod.

" It's just normal fever. You'll have to focus a little more on your diet. Eat properly and I am giving this medicine-"

She narrowed her eyes on the paper before writing something down.

" Yes. Take this medicine. And you'll be alright." She extended the paper to Mama and gave a professional smile, the smile she gave all her patients. Definitely.

" Thank you so much." Mama said standing from the cushioned seat. Making me follow suit.

" And yes, if your blood pressure doesn't comes down I'll start with your medicine for that. Although I am not prescribing it now. You're very young to start it." She chuckled.

Mama nodded and we walked out.

The smell of damp walls and phenol wafted past my nose, causing a dizzy sensation to run inside of my brain. The sight of blue dirty walls greeted us as we walked to the small room that served as a pharmacy.

I looked around with my nose scrunched as Mama bought the medicines. For all I could remember, we had been coming here since I was in my diaper days and now this was only a remnant of the once beautiful clinic.

Silently we walked out from the small clinic. The bright sun greeting us. I clutched the long black shawl tightly over my shoulders as mama stopped a rickshaw. Mama and the man kept arguing over the rates until finally he gave in, making my mother smile.

" Chalo beta!" Her hand brushed over my shoulder as she beckoned me to get in first.

The once familiar roads seemed to be erased from my memory and I missed seeing the towering mountains and green lush trees. The free birds and cool air that brushed the little locks of my hair behind my ears.

I felt Mama's stare on me and turned to her. Seeing the woman give me a soft smile.

" What do you want to eat? Hm, how about I make your favorite dish?" She asked.
