I come home and see Ashton sitting on the couch, his elbows on his knees, face buried in his hands.
"Ashton?" I sit next to him. "Ash, what's wrong?"
"I got fired today." He says slowly. "I'm so scared. How are we gonna pay? How are we gonna live?"
"Ashton, you've done it once, you can do it again. There's always more jobs available and there's always Christmas, someone could give us the mon-"
"Who's going to give us the money? Dad? No, he's a drunk and doesn't know what the hell we're doing, I doubt he even knows our names anymore. We can't ask mum, she's gone, and I don't want to ask Mrs. Hemmings or Mrs. Clifford or Mrs. Hood." He hisses.
"But what about Christmas?"
"I'm sorry Sophia, there won't be a Christmas this year." He says weakly.
"But there has to be, we have to, we can't have no Christmas!" My voice begins to shake and get squeaky; my eyes well up with tears.
"I can't fucking do everything!" He glares at me. "I'm trying so hard to keep my grades up, but I'm so scared, I want to do good in school, and I'm trying, but work is so stressful and I don't have another job and it's impossible to get another one at this time of the year."
"Ashton, you just need a summer job."
"But it's the middle of the season, it's hard to find one!"
"Listen, I know, but I've been looking for jobs, and I found one where they needed an opening and I was going to apply, but you can if you want."
"No, we both need jobs. You can have that one, I'll try to look around, but you can quit as soon as school starts again."
"Okay." I stand up and go to the wall phone in the kitchen.
"Hello?" Michael's voice says on the other line.
"Hi." I say quietly.
"Oh, hi, Sophia."
"Hi. Um, what are you doing the day after tomorrow?"
"Oh, Monday? Well, I've got a doctors appointment at two, why?"
"Um... Can you come over after it maybe?"
"Okay." Michael says. There's a long silence over the phone.
"Okay. Thanks, bye." I say.
"Bye." He says.
I hang up and go back to Ashton.
"Do you want to look for job advertisements and then see what's available tomorrow?"
"Yeah." He says quietly.
I take the newspapers from the recycling and look through one, putting a pile in front of Ash.
I read through them, looking for jobs.
"Here's one. It's a pizza place a few blocks away." Ashton leans over and looks over my shoulder.
"It pays pretty well." He says.
"Okay, check it out tomorrow." I say.
