"She thinks you're really attractive, and she said you're an amazing singer."
"I'm sorry, I've never heard of her before. What's her name again?"
"Abby Harkness."
"Never heard of her. What's she look like?"
"The girl version of Jack Davids."
"Oh. I don't think I want to meet her."
"I think you're lying."
"No, Soph, I'm really not." I admit.
"Come on, invite her to the party."
"No."
"Why?"
"I don't even know who she is!" I protest. I don't want to tell Sophia how much I want her to be at the party and how she looks gorgeous with her tanned skin and her wavy hair and bright eyes and her big smile with straight white teeth and how her hand fits perfectly in mine and how she isn't afraid to be herself and how she talks to me all the time and is comfortable enough with her status as a bookworm and band enthusiast to not care about who her boyfriend is. I love it when she puts her arm around me or laughs when I say something funny or even just says 'hello' on the phone. She makes me smile so much.
"Michael?"
"What? Oh, yeah."
"You've been zoning out a lot. What's up?"
"I'm just thinking. I think I don't want to invite Abby to the party." I look at Sophia, noticing how she does the same thing as her brother when she listens to music, tapping her foot slightly and tapping her fingers on her knee when the music speeds up as if she's almost singing along. She has the same hands as her brother, just smaller and more feminine, but long, slender fingers and little round palms. I love holding her hands, they're always soft and warm and-
"Michael." She says quietly.
"What?"
"Is something bothering you?" She leans in closer, lowering her voice.
"Kind of. I really don't want to invite Abby. I don't even know the girl and she sounds like a self-centered bitch, and it's kind of creepy how she's like, obsessed with me."
And I really really really want you to be there because I love you.
"Okay, I guess you don't have to." Sophia says reluctantly.
Please come to my party, please realize what I see in you, please, I love you.
"Anyways, I was wondering if you could come the day after the party?" I ask.
"Yeah, I guess I might be able to."
"Sophia, want to hear a joke?"
She smiles, giggling. "Sure."
"You're Sophucking sassy."
"So fucking sassy?" She asks.
"No, Sophucking sassy. Like Soph." I clarify for her.
"Oh!" She starts laughing. I smile. She looks so pretty when she laughs.
"Anyways, I have your present. It's not much, because I don't have a lot of spending money, but I think you'll like it." She reaches down and picks up the small bag with tissue paper sticking out of the top, handing it to me.
"Happy birthday." She says softly as I open the bag, pulling the gift out.
"Oh my gosh, it's so cute!" I take out the little plush lion.
"I know it's not much but it's all I could afford." She says.
"I love him." I say, hugging the lion and then hugging her.
"What are you going to name him?" She asks, laughing.
"Daniel." I state.
