Alena feels her eyes wince from the sudden light of the outside world. They had been inside the darkened burrow for only a matter of minutes, but the blinding French sun still hurt her eyes.
Schofield speaks up, needing to talk to Blake, "Blake- let's talk about this for a minute."
"Why?"
Blake starts walking, fast. He attempts to get away from Schofield and Alena, though the two are just as fast as him.
The girl notices William struggling to secure his webbing, she would reach out and help, but then they'd lose sight of Blake.
"Blake!" Alena shouts down the winding trench. This seems to only make the boy move even faster.
Alena lets out an audible sound of protest. "Tom! Come on! We have to be reasonable." Still the boy continued through the trench, bumping into numerous soldiers as he went.
"There's no use, Alena. He's a stubborn man, Tom Blake. And when his family are involved, he's worse." Schofield's eyes meet hers for a moment. His intense blue orbs staring into her pale blue eyes.
A moment passed between the two, before Schofield seemed to snap back to reality, "Right, we'd better go and find him then."
He started off down the trench again, Alena following close behind.
When they had caught uo to him, Schofield spoke, "Blake! We just need to think about it -"
"There's nothing to think about. It's my big brother." Alena could understand where the boy was coming from, but what he didn't realise is that he wasn't just putting his life on the line, but Alena's and Schofield's too.
"We should at least wait till it's dark -" Schofield was still trying to convince Blake to wait. However, his attempts were falling on deaf ears.
"Erinmore said to leave immediately." Blake snapped.
"Erinmore's never seen No Man's Land. We won't make it ten yards. If we just wait -" Blake cut him off again.
"You both heard him. He said the Boche have gone."
"Is that why he gave you two grenades?" Alena could feel the tension in the air, it was thick enough to cut it with a knife.
They continued walking, making their way to the second line, the three have to push themselves to the edge of the trench in order to avoid the herd of men awaiting their rations.
Blake and Alena manage to squeeze through without bumping anyone, Schofield however, wasn't as lucky, accidentally nudging into a Sergeant, "Watch where you're going!"
"Sorry!"
Blake kept walking, while Alena held back and waited for Schofield. They then jogged to keep up with the younger man.
