"Have you noticed Dan acting weird?"
"Uh, not really? Then again, I'm still fairly new so I don't really know how he usually acts," I reply, propping my elbow up on the table and resting my chin in my palm.
"He seems a bit...skittish," Miriam notes. "Especially when the Scarlet Knives are around. Which, by the way, is also weird. Like I've said before, the guys are kinda close with Dan but normally they aren't coming over this often."
"Didn't you say you think he'll ask them for favours sometimes? Do you think he did that recently?" I ask.
The girl hums as she leans back in her seat, looking up at the ceiling thoughtfully. "I've been thinking that could be a possibility, yes. It must've been bad if it is the case. Each time one of the guys come in here Dan becomes as white as a ghost." She looks around us before leaning in closer, voice dropping in volume. "If you ask me, I think he might've asked them to kill someone."
"You really think they would do that?" I whisper, eyes wide.
"They're a gang, for Christ's sake. Of course they will."
"I thought maybe they'd only go after specific people that have wronged them or something. Not just...anyone."
"Normally, yeah. But they owe Dan for all the information they get from him. I think he'd be able to persuade them into killing someone. Plus, if it's someone dangerous or posing a threat they'll probably want to help and protect the guy giving them intel," Miriam reasons.
"As of late, they've been coming around every four days. It's been four since they last came meaning they're due for a visit," I comment.
"You've been tracking when they come?" the black-haired girl laughs. "A bit obsessive, no?"
"I can't help it. They stand out a lot and I just happened to notice a pattern," I shrug, trying to play it off nonchalantly. Even I realize how creepy it is for me to be keeping tabs on them. But it's like something deep inside me, my subconscious maybe, is drawn to them and just curious in general.
"True, I see your point. If they stop by when we're here maybe I'll ask them about it. There's a good chance they won't tell me since I'm not really involved in their business anymore, but it all depends on who shows up. Some of the guys have a soft spot and will give into my begging easily."
So we wait but an hour goes by and there's no sign of any of the members. Miriam is starting to get bored so I suggest we go walk around town. As we are exiting, I see two of the club members getting off their bikes, most likely going into the pub.
"Miri--"
I cut myself off when I notice the expression on her face. It's blank, no distinct emotion present, but almost like she's forcing it, in a way that is quite unsettling. Her eyes meet mine for a split second and she smiles but there's an underlying sadness seeping through. It doesn't take a genius to guess who one of these unfamiliar faces are.
"Miri, we didn't know you'd be here," one of the guys remarks, brows furrowed as his eyes dart between her and his partner. "We asked Dan and he said you weren't scheduled to work today so..."
"Felt like hanging out at the pub on my day off," Miriam replies. She faces the other guy and gives a curt nod. "Kane."
"Hey, Miri...am."
A thick silence falls between us all and I'm beginning to wonder who will have the guts to break it. Finally, the dark-haired girl lifts a hand to gesture to me.
"This is Nicole, she's new. I assume Gary must've mentioned her? Probably referred to her as the ginger bartender girl that rejected him?" She points to the unknown biker. "That's Ammo."
