Jungkook comes into the pub at exactly 9:04 pm. How do I know the exact time? Because prior to his arrival I had been staring at the clock, realizing my shift was over and simultaneously wondering if Jungkook was really gonna pass up the offer of a free drink. Alas, he has appeared.
"You're a bit late," I note when he saunters up to the bar just as I'm removing my waist apron.
"On the contrary, I'm right on time," he winks while sliding into a seat, making a vague gesture at me with his hand, "you're not on the clock."
"Yeah? But wasn't the whole point of this meeting to have me make you a drink?"
"I just said you'd need to buy me one--never specified whether you'd be the one making it," he shrugs. "Besides, now that you're no longer working it means you can have a drink with me this time. An actual drink."
I eye him skeptically. "You plan to get me drunk?"
"Where the fuck did I imply that? I just said that you could have a drink, nothing about getting you hammered. So please, enlighten me," Jungkook deadpans.
I wave him off dismissively, telling him not to dwell on it and that I'm only joking--which may or may not be the truth but that doesn't matter. The girl who took over for me comes up to us and asks for our order. Jungkook gets a couple of tequila shots and I get a mojito. It's not until we both have our drinks in our hands that conversation picks up again.
"Aren't you driving home? You sure you should be having those?" I ask, eyeing the shot glasses.
"Two measly shots aren't gonna knock me off my feet, lightweight," Jungkook snorts, downing one of them.
"Alright, well, I don't wanna see your body found in some ditch off the side of a road on the news tomorrow morning."
"Wow, you must be fun at parties."
"I'm being realistic and safe," I correct.
"Mm, sure. How's your job here? Do you like it?"
"Yeah, it's good," I nod. "Kinda sucked at first since Dan refused to give me later shifts, meaning I was stuck working only in daylight when the bar is a ghost town. But now he schedules me for whenever." I swirl my drink around a bit before setting it down to trace the rim. "I guess the only complaint I have is that I'm not really close with a lot of my colleagues. I've got Miriam, Tyler used to be chill but now there's a bit of distance between us, Dan is okay, but that's about it. I talk with the other coworkers when I have the chance but it's not like we're super close to the point where I'll go out of my way to find them just to chat."
"You're still fairly new, though," Jungkook points out.
"Very true. That's what I tell myself, that over time I'll probably be able to open up more and stuff. But some people just don't really seem interested in befriending me. In particular, the kitchen staff. It's like they all avoid me like the plague. What's up with that?"
"Yeah, fuck the kitchen staff."
"Zip it, Foghorn Leghorn," I hiss, smacking the brunette's shoulder and quickly glancing over at the kitchen, expecting a cook to walk out any second while shaking a spatula angrily.
"If nothing changes in another month or two and you're really worried about it, you could always try and get a job at Tranquility," Jungkook proposes.
"Really? I can work there?"
"I said you could try," Jungkook emphasizes. "The chances are very low, especially since you don't have any strong connection to anyone in the club. Natalie doesn't like letting outsiders in."
