When we wake up our bodies experience a phenomenon called Sleep Inertia. You know that feeling of grogginess our bodies fight through when we first wake up? Why some of us need that morning coffee to snap ourselves out of the groggy funk? That is Sleep Inertia. It's our brains lacking the ideal blood flow necessary to kick start our day. The feeling of grogginess and persuasive urges to sleep through our alarms gradually falls away the higher the cerebral blood flow becomes. It begins with the ancient corners such as the brainstem until gradually the blood begins to pick up in the anterior cortical aspects of the brain region. Bottom line; Sleep Inertia fades once there is an increase in cerebral blood flow.

So it takes me a minute to deduce Sam's completely disappeared from the motel room in the middle of the night. First, it was arm stretching over his side, my eyes trying to remain open. Second I sit up in bed and take a minute to check if Dean's still asleep before scanning the room. Thirdly I stumble clumsily and tiredly from the bed to check the empty bathroom. It's on the fourth leg of my room scan that I realise what's going on. Stumbling between the beds I slide my hand underneath my pillow only to be proven right. The Colt is missing and I know exactly who took it. Only when I discover this do the full effects of Sleep Inertia fade and I find myself crouched wide-eyed beside my bed.

"Dammit, Sam." For a long moment, I debate between waking Dean up and leaving to search for Sam myself. Hopefully, drag him back before he can make a stupid decision or idiotic mistake. Staring at the door for a long moment I rise to my feet and decide on nudging Dean awake. I tap him once before he's swinging a gun out from under his pillow to target me. "Just me", I assure Dean, quickly rounding the bed to toss Dean his jacket "Get up. Sam's going after the Crossroads Demon."

"Sam... What?" Shrugging on my denim jacket I spin on my feet to see Dean squinting over at me. Still trying to wake up himself pinching the bridge of his nose, Dean tosses his gun tiredly into the middle of his bed "Use your words El."

"Sam's taken the Colt and I'm fairly sure both of us know the place he's going", I explain to Dean who seems to perk up some more at the mention of the Colt. Snatching a map off the bedside I open it and flatten it in front of Dean when I perch myself beside him in his bed "It's a small town so I don't think a crossroad should be that hard to fin-"
