Nagisa pulled on a pair of white gloves and looked at herself in the mirror. Her long, blue hair was curled and set on top of her head, some had fallen loose and little ringlets touched her shoulders. She was wearing a dark blue satin dress that had shining diamonds around the shoulders. The dress hung snugly off her shoulders slightly. She was wearing a sparkling necklace the glinted when she moved. She stepped away from the mirror as her maid walked in.

"The guests will be arriving in an hour, ma'am," the girl said as she entered the room.

"Thanks for informing me, Hinano. Is my mom finished getting ready?"

"Yes. I have been sent to take you to the throne room. The servants are finishing last-minute preparations."

"I see. Thank you. Mom probably wants to lecture me about how to act tonight. At least I got her to invite Kaede and Rio. I think that Itona was also invited, because of his noble status, so at least I won't be completely alone. Do you think I will find anyone this time?"
"I'm sure of it. This is your last chance to choose on your own. If you don't choose someone, then your mom will choose for you and from what I have heard, she would like you to marry Prince Asano."

She shuddered. She had met Prince Asano before, he was stuck up and thought he was better than everyone else. His father runs the most powerful kingdom, though, so it would only make sense that her mother would want her to marry him.

Nagisa followed Hinano out of her room and to the throne room. Once they got inside, Nagisa saw that it was fully decorated. There was a long table set to the side with chairs and a bar sat no too far away. The musicians were tuning their instruments and practicing before the ball. Nagisa's mother sat in her throne, watching as the servants finished their preparations. When Nagisa walked in, she smiled towards her and waved her over.

"You better behave tonight. No sneaking off or misbehaving. I have had enough of this. If you do not choose someone by the end of the week, then I will choose for you to marry Prince Asano. He is a nice boy with a powerful kingdom. And, if you don't behave, you will be punished," her mother threatened before pulling away.

There would be events every night for the next week, so Nagisa could socialize with the princes. On the last night, they would hold a bigger ball and Nagisa would choose the prince she wanted then. Her mother waved her out of the throne room and Nagisa made her exit. There was still a while left before the ball, so she went to the palace library. On her way to the library, she found Irana, trying to flirt with Karasuma, and failing. He just stood, ignoring her. Nagisa giggled and turned, but bumped right into someone.

"Are you okay, your highness?" someone asked, she recognized his voice.

"Oh, Itona! How are you doing? I was just headed to the library, do you want to join me?" Nagisa asked, ignoring the boy's question.

"Um, sure, but isn't the ball starting soon?"
"Not for about a half-hour. I am glad that my mom invited you. There should be few nobles there, if you recognize any guards in the crowd, remember not to call them out. They are undercover and making sure everyone is safe," she reminded him.

"It seems you never will let that incident go."

"Nope."

They entered the library and Nagisa grabbed a book. She was decent at reading and speaking different languages, so she could read most books. They read for a while until the ball was ten minutes away. Nagisa realized this and stood up.

"As much as I would like to stay here all night, it seems there is a party I must attend. If I don't I fear the wrath of my mother," Nagisa half-joked.

She made her way to the throne room and waited for the guests to arrive. The first people to arrive were her friends, Kaede and Rio. They were both princesses, and they came because Nagisa begged her mother to let them come. After them, all sorts of guests arrived. Many were just nobles, but there were a few princes around too. Nagisa was talking to Kaede and Rio when a group of buys approached them. Nagisa looked up and saw Asano surrounded by his prince friends.

"Hey there girlies. What are you princesses doing here all alone? You must be lonely, care for some company?" once of Asano's cronies said, slyly.

"No thanks," Rio said, turning towards Nagisa and Kaede.

"Playing hard to get, are we? Now, why don't you all tell us your names?" another asked.

"The princess said no, didn't you hear? Now back off," someone said, coming up to their group.

The person approaching was a red-haired boy. Asano seemed to seeth with anger as the boy joined the group. Asano pushed his friends away and they left while the red-head chuckled before turning towards the girls.

"Thank you, Karma," Rio said and walked towards him.

"You know him, Rio?" Kaede asked, Nagisa still had yet to say something. When it came to socializing, that was one of Nagisa's downfalls.

"Yes, we go way back. Kaede, Nagisa, this is Prince Karma Akabane. Karma, these are my friends, Princess Kaede, and the star of the show, Princess Nagisa," Rio introduced everyone.

Karma looked towards the girl named Nagisa. She was short but looked really mature. Her hair was curled and set on top of her head and little loose ringlets rested on her shoulders. The girl was pale and the dress she wore complimented it perfectly. Her eyes shone with nervousness but also wonder. Nagisa felt his gaze and shrunk away even further, but Kaede stopped her. Rio noticed Karma staring at her best friend and smiled to herself. Looks like I found myself a new project, Rio chuckled to herself.

"Hey, Kaede, let's go grab some drinks," Rio said and dragged Kaede off before she could reply.

Karma and Nagisa stood in silence. He felt nervous, a girl had never made him feel this way before, and he did not even know what her personality was like, just that she was really adorable. He finally decided to speak up.

"So you're the hostess of this party?" he asked.

"Y-yes. W-well, it was more of my mom's idea," she replied, quietly.

"Your mom?"

"Yes. She wants me to get married soon. We have thrown many parties, but I have not found anyone I like yet. This is my last chance," she said, getting more confident in the conversation.

"I see. You must have it rough. Is your mother mean?"

"I-i.... Well.... I love my mother very much. And my life isn't all bad. I have plenty of friends around the palace."

"Would you like to dance with me Nagisa?" Karma asked and the girl slowly nodded shocked by the sudden proposition.

They waited for the next dance to begin and joined in with the crowd of dancers. Nagisa followed Karma's footsteps and found the pulse of the music. They danced together. Karma noticed that Nagisa started off hesitant, but soon became more confident and added more moves to the dance. Some people had stopped dancing to watch them dance. Once the song ended, all eyes were on them. Nagisa blushed and ran out of the room. Karma saw Rio smirking slightly and questioned it before dismissing it as her being weird again.

A/N: So that was the first chapter. The next ert will continue where this chapter left off. I have always hated it when fanfictions make Kaede the antagonist, so she will not be one of the antagonists in this story. I personally liked her as a character and hold nothing against her.
