NERVOUS TAPPING WAS HEARD over the calm, quiet breeze waving between the two partners. they both stopped at an intersection, about to look both ways to cross before giyuu held out his hand signaling to the girl beside him to stop. you complied, not wanting to cross without your partner anyways.
giyuu bent down to organize the music sheets and notes in his hand and put them neatly inside his folder. he then shoved his folder inside his bag, slung it over his shoulder, and grabbed your hand to cross the street.
your hands swung together while walking to the front gates of the high school. to say you were nervous was an understatement. you were kind of terrified. it's not like you hated playing the violin, you just hated the crowd and the judging faces. all it took was one single mistake and the crowd would probably laugh and humiliate you. but one look at giyuu and all your worries suddenly vanished.
you both met two years ago in band class. the music teacher put you and giyuu together to play a duet from a famous composer - and not wanting to defy your teacher - you both said yes. giyuu was awkward and hesitant, but after getting to know him and having a friendly conversation, he visibly relaxed around you. it made you feel good, knowing you had possibly befriended this new acquaintance.
ever since your first encounter, you two were basically inseparable. you would always go to giyuu for comfort. he would always know how to cheer you up and where to take you whenever you were feeling down. you would also be lying to yourself if you said you didn't have feelings for the timid boy.
giyuu, as gentle as he could muster, massaged your hand with the pad of his thumb in an attempt to ease your nerves. he knew you were anxious, hell, even he was. but, he was anxious for a different reason.
he appreciated your kindness for wanting to befriend him and care for him since he isn't really the best at communicating with others. you made his high school experience enjoyable. he looked forward to seeing every second of you. whether it was to eat lunch with him at the rooftop, practice with him in the music room, or running away from your scary math teacher, he savored every moment spent with you.
"[name], we'll be fine. we're gonna perform our piece just like we practiced, and then we're gonna win, alright?" giyuu reassured, staring into your eyes, hoping to erase the fear that was stuck in them. you merely nodded, staring right back into his eyes that eased your anxiety by the minute.
giyuu led you inside the building and into the practice hall. inside the obnoxiously loud hall were the other participants in the competition. seeing them play their instruments effortlessly made you doubt your own abilities at the violin. you shook your head at the discouraging thought and started to unpack your own instrument.
