Chapter Three
“Stop!” A male voice yelled in the distance. It was too late. Startled by his new presence Melodine lost her balance and plummeted to her demise, the wind whisking her away to her afterlife.
On the rooftop, the blue-haired stranger stood in astonishment. He gawked at the scene below him, watching the girl fall to her death. A gust of wind caused his conscious to focus on the issue and contemplate a rescue plan. His eyes fluttered close, his vision lost to the darkness. He mumbled a word and waited for it to occur.
However, when he positioned himself at the edge of the roof and peeked down, he realised Melodine was still falling, getting closer to the ground. He cursed the night sky and began again. He mustered all his energy to his head, the power circulating his body.
“Insigio,” he whispered to the moon. The word travelled toward Melodine, gradually lifting her to the sky. The intensity of the word brought him to his knees in pain, his hands clutching the sides of his head. He was blinded by the burning in his head that he never noticed Melodine landing on the rooftop floor. Due to the ache in his head he lost control of his powers and threw Melodine on the rooftop.
Confusion and shock raised their heads in Melodine’s body, bringing the strong emotions to brighten her eyes. She forced her body up, with much difficulty, in a standing position. The sound of someone panting aimed her attention at the boy with blue hair. He was gasping for air while muttering words to himself.
She wanted explanations to her sudden flying experience and the answers were right in front of her in the form of a boy.
“Are you okay?” It wasn’t the question she wanted to ask, but the well-being of the strange guy was of utter importance at that moment.
“Just peachy.” The snarl in his voice wasn’t very distinguishable, yet Melodine still heard it as if he was shouting it at her.
The awkward silence following his words was eating her up inside. She stared transfixed at his bright eyes, all trains of thoughts disappeared into his silver hues. She had only seen those silver eyes once, and that was when she first looked at herself in the mirror. It was an exact copy of her left eye.
He saw her shiver as a result of the breeze that spanned around them. Those silver eyes travelled down her body, sparking an interest in her. He noticed the thin, white dress that adorned her body, courtesy of the hospital.
“Suicide isn’t the answer to your problems Melodine,” He said seriously, his eyes never leaving her.
“H-h-how...” She was rendered speechless. The reality of him knowing her name was a mystery all by itself.
“I have known you for a long time, in the shadows mostly,” he replied to her silent question, “To cure your curiosity, my name is Jason Forrest.”
“I wasn’t going to commit suicide,” Melodine snapped. She stored his name in her head for future reference, “You made me fall. I didn’t expect anyone to be up here, so your presence surprised me.”
Jason peered at her, not looking one bit apologetic, “Well, it was an honest mistake.”
Laughter filled the rooftop, the harsh sound being carried by the wind and causing him to have the quivers. Melodine’s eyes were cold and emotionless, and her laugh was the same. She was starting to dislike the strange boy.
“Honest? Are you freaking kiddin’ me? If it wasn’t for what you did, I would have been a pancake on the road,” she said harshly.
“Okay, since it’s all settled, I’ll get going.” He turned around and walked away. Melodine ran after him, she wasn’t going to let him leave without any answers. Just before he opened the door she grabbed his wrist. The force behind her hand was too strong for him to unrestrain himself.
“You’re not going anywhere. You haven’t answered any of my questions. And, I can assure you, I have enough questions to keep you occupied. I have all the time in the world,” she said in a low voice.
“Let me go!” He warned in a whisper. His silver eyes darkened slightly and his posture was tense as if preparing for an attack.
Melodine gazed straight into his eyes, without blinking. Jason was doing the same thing. An unannounced staring competition had occurred between them, both of them not willing to break the contact. The silence crept between them. Ironically it wasn’t awkward; It was a comfortable silence. If only they weren’t shooting daggers at each other from their eyes. Finally, Melodine let go of his wrist and stood back.
“How the hell did you do that?”
“Depends on what you mean?” He retorted, raising an eyebrow, “All I’ve heard is that hell is not the place to be. So, I try to be a good boy.”
“Not that, you idiot. I mean, how did you get me back up?” she asked again with more clarification.
“Magic,” he replied in a serious voice, looking deeply into her her mismatched eyes. He was prepared for her reaction. It wasn’t everyday someone announced the existence of magic. The response was as Jason expected; Melodine guffawed mockingly at him.
“Magic?” she repeated in a sarcastic voice, “Honey, why don’t you go back to the mental ward.”
“I’m not crazy if that’s what you’re insinuating.” He glared hard at her. She could feel the full power of that glare, it sent shivers down her body.
“If it weren’t magic, honey, how did you get back up on the rooftop? Huh? Not so smart now, are you?
Melodine was inaudible, his words hanging heavy in the air. Her thoughts were incoherent; one part was stating that there is no such thing as magic, whereas the other part was trying to decipher her earlier flying experience. No matter how she looked into it there was no explanations for it. However, was magic the answer?
“Look, to be frankly honest, I don’t care whether you believe in magic or not. The reason for my presence is that I came to inform you that there’s a way to wake your comatose friend,” He announced firmly, “She’s not in a coma because of the accident, which by the way was deliberate. There are people preventing her from waking up.”
“Why?” she said hesitantly. The words coming out of his mouth sounded like a foreign language. There was no sense in it. No matter how many times she turned it over in her head, it still was ridiculous.
“Unfortunately, I am in no position to answer all your questions. Ask your mother or, better yet, ask the voice in your head.
To say Melodine was shocked would be an understatement. If anything he said up to that point wasn’t logic, then this definitely did make sense. No one was aware of the voice in her head, even Lena. She felt it was better that way.
If she uttered a word about it, then people would look at her more differently than they already do. They would think she had lost her mind or was schizophrenic. And, she was neither. There were a few times she thought she was mentally strange, however.
“How-“ she was dumbfounded. Before she could finish her question, she was interrupted by the enigmatic guy opposite her.
“I see auras. Surrounding you, there are two auras. As it’s impossible for a person to have two auras and as there’s no one else present here, I’m assuming there’s a voice in your head,” He answered her unspoken question, “It’s not just a voice, it’s another person. That means there is another person inside you. It might be unheard of but there is no reasonable explanation for it.”
Everything he had said on the rooftop were new to Melodine. She could feel her head pounding indicating at the headache that was preparing to assault her.
Either it was a coincidence or not, the voice in her head was as quiet as a mouse. He had not said a word that night, which was very unlike him as he couldn’t shut up at times.
“It has been a pleasure to finally meet face to face, but I have errands to go to. Once you have found your answers and are willing to save your friend, meet me at Heathrow airport two weeks from today, “ And with that he bid her goodbye, and disappeared from her sight. She would like to have said, he disappeared in a puff of smoke but he used the door like any normal person.
