Chapter 1
"Melodine, where’s your head at?" Tom asked the raven-haired beauty.
"Huh?" Melodine stirred from her daydream, and looked at her boss with confusion.
"He means pay attention freak," the Voice answered her question.
"Sorry, Tom, I was thinking of something," said Melodine to the tall, old man stood in front of her.
Her boss shook his head and walked away. Thomas Reid, Tom was his nickname used by his friends, had been Melodine’s employer for three years. Not a day had gone by, that he hasn’t chided her for not paying attention. The CD and game store was a dark and moody place, which was only brightened by the sound of music coming from the speakers. The place suited Melodine’s personality perfectly, in Tom’s opinion. However, he couldn’t help being captivated by her. She was a puzzle in itself.
Tom liked her a lot. Never in his fifty-five years of existence had he met a girl like her. Melodine was compelling; she affected everyone around her. Despite the long scar that begins from her left temple all the way down to her chin, marring her delicate face, she was still found bewitching. He was not attracted to her more than an employer; it was because she looked like she belonged somewhere else. Even though she was beautiful, she still gave off the aura that she was dangerous. The image of her illuminated the shop, especially her mismatched eyes.
"You should pay more attention to your job, love, or else you will get fired," mocked the Voice in her head.
Melodine May wasn’t your average girl-next-door. No, in fact, she was the complete opposite. Her head occupied another person’s thoughts. If someone saw her across the street, she would be considered normal. However, if they found out she was constantly talking to a male voice in her head. Then 'normal' wouldn’t be the word to describe her. It would be deranged, psycho, and so on.
"I was talking to you," she responded, she was furious that he got her into trouble again, "It was your bloody fault."
The only response she got from him was his deep throaty laugh. His laughter soothed her, and made her feel warm inside. Although, she likes this, she despised him with a pure passion. She turned a blind eye to his mockery, and focused on the customer walking towards the cashier.
"Hi," the boy said with a smile that showed his dimples. He was a cute kid in his teens.
"Hey." Melodine scanned the items that the boy picked out from the shop, "Would you like anything else?"
"No, that’s all," He replied, "Cool eyes, are they contact lenses?"
"Nope," She responded with emotionless eyes, "That will be £25 please."
"So, how is it like that?" inquired the blonde kid.
"I don’t know kid, I was born like that. If you’re still curious, then ask god." Her eyes were the only thing that frightened people. Combined with her scar, it was an image that mothers ran away from dragging their sons along the way. She was like dynamite, if you got too close she would explode. The blonde kid collected his bag, and strolled out the door, after noticing the anger forming in her mismatched-eyes.
"Hey, love, calm down, it looks like steams are going to come out of your ears," the Voice said softly.
She brushed off his comment, and concentrated on her work for the rest of the night.
