Chapter Two
It had been two months since the new teacher, Mr Elsy, settled in. Each day that Melodine had his lessons, was another day of her hatred growing for him. It appeared he had a personal vendetta against her. Not a day passed that he wouldn’t giver her detention. It was either not paying attention in class, not completing homework, and not answering questions. The latter excuse was ridiculous, especially when the questions required personal opinions on the subject.
Mr Elsy was a loving character, according to the teachers and students. Even, Lena liked him. Well, Lena liked everyone in Melodine’s opinion. She wasn’t afraid to open herself to people. Though, many people did find her personality too weird for them.
Suspicions of Mr Elsy arose from Melodine on many occasions. It rooted from a special day, where Melodine found something extraordinary about him. It was a thing that made her think twice about her sanity.
It was a Friday afternoon, Melodine was in her last period, English. Her eyes were fixated on a squirrel outside, who was running around a tree. It was a peculiar character.
"Miss May, would you like to explain to us what Carol Ann Duffy is trying to say in this poem?" Mr Elsy asked in a sickly sweet voice, that caused goosebumps to rise on her arm. Melodine turned her cold eyed to the teacher, keeping eye contact with him, "I find them boring."
"Miss May, that wasn’t the answer I was looking for."
"I don’t care, the poem is boring and depressing, and I rather be somewhere else than this lesson."
Mr Elsy was irritated now. His hands were in a fist, and he was trying to refrain himself from getting angry. Mr Elsy never got angry, that was one of the reasons why he was admired so much. But, when it came to a certain girl, his blood boiled whenever he saw her.
"Detention, Miss May. Maybe one day you will learn to control your tongue," he said.
The final bell rang, signalling the end of the day. The corridors were like world war three with the students pushing and shoving their way out. It was a chaos. After five minutes, the corridors were deserted apart from one girl. She was walking to room two oh five. She knocked on the door twice waiting for it to open.
"Ah yes, come on in Miss May," Mr Elsy’s eyes lightened up when he saw her, and smiling at a hidden secret. It was a look that Melodine didn’t like. It creeped her out. She took a seat in the middle row not wanting to be close to him, but at the same time she wanted to be close to the door. She didn’t trust him.
"Melodine, what does your name mean?" he asked curiously. It was hard to tell whether he was being sincere or not.
"I don’t know," she replied in an uninterested voice. It was the honest truth. She didn’t have a clue what her name meant. Every time she asked her mum, she would evade the question. She had learned to stop asking.
"Okay, so how did you get the scar? Car accident?" He questioned her glancing up from his paperwork. His round glasses were perched on top of his nose, making him look like his profession. It sounded like an interrogation to Melodine.
"Nope," That’s all she said, a simple ‘no’. "Why the so many questions? Why don’t I ask some questions? Why are you creepy, Sir? How come I get a bad vibe from you?"
