"No Josh you're going to collapse the damn thing!" I giggled as Josh placed the largest looking stick right on top of our framework. The entire thing came tumbling down and all our hard work was ruined. Josh dropped his jaw in a dramatic look that said "what are you gunna do now?" I laughed even harder and began picking the sticks back up, placing them the way we had them before.
"We're going to be sleeping under the stars again if you keep this up." I warned, trying to keep my giggles from escaping my mouth.
"Aweh that wouldn't be so bad! lighten up!" Josh teased.
"Right, keep thinking that. don't start whining when the rain ruins your hair." I joked lightly. He walked over to me to help me place the sticks correctly. my heart raced when I felt him come near me, I could feel my stomach start to twist in knots. The thought of Brody came into my mind like the force of a wrecking ball hitting the side of an old building. Brody, my boyfriend. The one who was probably worried sick about me. I pushed the thought from my mind, not wanting to kill the positive mood Josh was in. we worked quickly, and soon the framework of our tent was done.
"Now what?" Josh said as he put his hands on his hips.
"The leaves!" I laughed.
It took us about 2 hours but eventually we had the tent built, it didn't look very attractive but it did look sturdy.
"Nice job bob the builder." Josh said as he patted me on the back.
"Shut up." I giggled.
"Nice work Josh." Melissa said as she came up to us. She stood right between Josh and I, forcing me to step back a bit. Josh gave me a look that said "help me" but I just gave him a wink and walked away to visit with Cat and Dylan.
"How's it going? Need any help?" I asked as I approached them. Cat smiled at me softly.
"Not at the moment hun. thank you though." she smiled at me sweetly.
"Want me to take Dylan? I'm sure it can't be easy to build this thing on your own and watch a child." I suggested.
"That would actually be wonderful! Thank you!" She smiled kindly. I smiled back and picked up Dylan, he didn't fuss or whine and I walked over to the shore, setting him down on his feet on the wet sand. he held onto my fingers to keep balance as the waves kissed his toes. He let out a little giggle and stomped his feet in delight. I laughed at him and watched as he enjoyed the cold water and the warm breeze. I envied Dylan. I envied Dylan more than I had ever envied any model on a magazine cover. I envied him for the way he found such delight in small things like the tides touching his delicate feet. I envied him for the way his innocent mind kept him shielded from what was really happening right now. To him, this felt like a camping trip or just some time spent outdoors and I wanted nothing more than to be three years old, and clueless.
"Fishy?" He said as he pointed towards the water.
"Yeah, there's tons of fish in there." I laughed.
"Fishy!" He said again with a little giggle. he bent over and ran his hands through the cold water, splashing it up and all over himself. he made a sour face but then laughed. I was about to lift him back up out of the water when Josh came running past me, grabbing Dylan in his arms and bringing him close to his body. Dylan giggled and cheered.
"Going for a swim are we?" Josh asked with a raised eyebrow.
"Definently not! These are my only clothes! Plus it's freezing." I crossed my arms.
"You could just not wear clothes." Josh winked. I rolled my eyes.
"Keep it PG around the child." I shook my head.
"It's not like he can understand what I'm saying." Josh pointed out.
"I want to swim!" Melissa said as she came towards us. Joshs grin fell right off his face.
"Could you actually take Dylan back to Cat? I think it's time for his nap." I asked.
"Why can't you do it?" Melissa questioned.
"Melissa, will you please?" Josh asked. She looked at Josh with adoring eyes.
"Fine." She huffed and took Dylan from Josh, then making her way toward Cat. I was in the water up to my ankles, and Josh was in about mid-calf. his body was tall, and if I were to stand where he was it would be up to my knees. He raised his hands in the air as if to say "lets go!"
"Josh I'm not going in the water." I said stubbornly.
"Oh yes you are!" He said loudly as he grabbed my wrist and dragged me in, causing me to lose my balance and I fell into the cold waves. I let out a squeal and I could hear Josh laughing uncontrollably.
"Josh!!!! I'm going to kill you!!!" I said as I wiped water from my face. my clothes were soaking wet yet Josh remained dry, with only the bottoms of his pants wet. i stood up with a smile playing on my own lips.
"Okay okay, I think we need to settle this war with a hug." I grinned as I opened my arms. he stopped laughing and his smile turned into a look of worry.
"Get away from me Quinn!" He warned. I ignored him, and lunged toward him with open arms. he tried to dodge me which made him lose his balance and sent the both of us tumbling into the water together. He had gripped my arm to make sure I wouldn't get hurt, and we both say in the shallow water, soaking wet but laughing.
"You're so dead!" Josh said as he lightly splashed water at me.
"You started it!" I laughed. He looked straight at me, out eyes meeting. I felt paralyzed, like suddenly I lost control of my body and I couldn't look away from him. I could feel a strong urge to break the distance between us and press my lips to his. I leaned forward slightly but shook my head and stood up. I have a boyfriend. I love Brody. I have a boyfriend. I love Brody. I repeated this over and over in my mind until the feeling had completely vanished.
"I'm cold." I said sharply as I got out of the water.
"Let's go see if the others have any spare clothes, or if we can start a fire." Josh suggested as he stood up as well.
