I gulp nervously as I realize that we have finally arrived at our destination. Five months ago, my father thought it was a good idea for me to be associated with children my age, hoping that maybe summer camp was the solution for me to step out of my comfort zone. Looking at some of the children reconnects with familiar faces. My anxiety starts to set in. I knew I couldn't do it. However, just as I was about to go back to the car, my father was no longer there. I have no choice but to stay here for twenty-nine more days.
As I look at the big crowd, it seems like I wasn't the only one who appeared nervous. That calmed me down. But there were already some groups that have started forming.
"Can I have everyone's attention?" A woman cheery voice echoed as she stood by the podium. Whispers were hushed as we give her our full attention.
"Before we start to separate everyone into groups. I just have some announcements. First of all, if you are a returning camper. Please follow Amanda who is holding a red flag. As for our new campers, please follow Connor who is holding a blue flag. The second thing is we have ground rules in this camp. Girls and boys sleep in separate cabins. In each of these cabins will consist of one counselor. There are more detailed rules on the manual that I have each provided you with. I suggest you read every single one of these rules as they are important. I know everyone's excited to go to their own groups, so I'll wrap this announcement quickly. I hope each one of you will have a wonderful experience this year and again welcome to Camp Paradise."
When she finished, everyone starts to disperse. I couldn't shake off the feeling of being watched. But when I observed my surroundings. Nothing seems unusual. It must be paranoia after watching a horror movie last night. Ignoring my sixth sense, I made my way over to the counselor who was holding the blue flag. I see that there wasn't a lot of new campers. Our group consists of nine boys who were quietly whispering among themselves, a girl who was wearing very expensive clothing and carried a Louis Vuitton tote, two girls who stood beside her with disgust, a curly brunette haired boy who stood alone, and myself. After a long and boring fifteen minutes of Connor telling us our schedule for the week, I couldn't help but get that bad feeling again.
Out of the corner of my eye, I noticed a counselor who was checking out a girl who appeared to be around my age. That was honestly weird. I shook off the feeling realizing he was just probably looking if any campers need help as today was hectic.
