If I hadn't promised Jasai I'd be here, I'd probably be at home, snuggled up with Gage, my new Dalmatian puppy. Jasai gave him to me as a late birthday gift, and he's been a whirlwind of energy and affection. His black-and-white spots are as lively as his antics, and while he's been keeping me on my toes—and even annoying Rabbit a bit—I can't help but love him. He's a bit of a handful and could use some serious training because I'm getting to the point where I might need to replace my couch.
I've been adjusting to dog mom life, juggling Gage's boundless energy and trying to avoid thinking about certain people. But here I am, just as I promised Jasai. Samiyah and Tatiana are already at the bar, engrossed in conversation.
"Hi there," I say, sliding into the empty bar stool next to Samiyah, trying to mask my nerves with a small, hesitant smile.
"Oh hey, beautiful!" Samiyah greets me with an unexpectedly tight hug. I gently pull back, caught off guard by her warmth. "We were just about to call you."
"Yeah, girl, what took you so long?" Tatiana adds, giving me a quick, slightly awkward embrace from her seat. The gesture feels a bit off.
"My walk with Gage took longer than usual." The bartender arrives to take our drink orders. "What are you having?"
"Mimosas," They both respond.
"I'll have the same. Thanks." I smile at the bartender as he nods and heads off. I could definitely use a drink or two to ease the tension. I sit there quietly and let Samiyah and Tatiana lead the conversation.
"I'm happy we finally have a chance to hang out," Samiyah says, her smile genuine. "I've fallen for Miami since we got here."
"Yeah, it's a vibe," I agree. Miami's lively pace is a stark contrast to Harlem's slower rhythm.
"It's a different pace, but it's beautiful. Blaze really likes it here, so I'm growing to love it too," Tatiana says, her smile radiant. It makes me wonder why Blaze felt the need to step out. But now isn't the time to dwell on that.
I nod, unsure of what to say next.
"How long have you been here?" Samiyah asks.
"A little over a year and a half," I reply, accepting my mimosa from the bartender. The less they know about my reasons, the better.
"It looks like you're settling in well," Samiyah notes, eyeing my Pavé diamond studs and Christian Louboutin sandals with interest.
"It has been good. Can't complain." I shrug.
"I wouldn't mind staying here long if that's what Jasai plans," Samiyah says, shifting the topic.
"Hell yeah, me too! I'm sure Blaze feels the same," Tatiana adds. Hearing Blaze's name from her makes me uncomfortable, especially since thoughts of him stir up confusing memories.
