"Don't go build no life without me 'cause you're mine still
Oh, and I don't wanna go unless you make me
Lately I've been gone, I'm feeling crazy."

Christmas used to feel like magic. This year, it felt more like a pause button: one day where we could breathe, eat, and pretend the world wasn't cracked wide open. Gifts had already been exchanged earlier in the day. Wrapping paper littered the floor hours ago, and now it sat balled up in a trash bag by the door. We'd ordered Chinese food for dinner, and everyone had eaten like they hadn't seen a meal in days. Now, the apartment was still, quiet in that post-holiday kind of way. Full bellies. Tired laughs. Soft music humming from someone's playlist in the background.

I sat cross-legged in the corner of the living room with Samiyah, tucked just far enough away from everyone else to talk freely. The warm glow from the Christmas lights wrapped around the window gave the room a soft haze, making everything feel a little slower, a little safer. Gage was curled up by the heater, half-snoring. Kaylee and Zyra were in the kitchen playing some random card game, and Blaze... he was somewhere nearby, but giving me space.

Samiyah leaned in, her face drawn with quiet concern as she listened. I'd just unloaded everything on her from the truth about my addiction, the withdrawal, Blaze's distance, and how hard it's been just existing in the same apartment with him while barely touching or speaking. Even if we were now sleeping in the same bed.

I'd spilled it all. Now, she just sat there, mouth slightly parted, taking it in.

"Wow, Jaz," She breathed, finally breaking the silence. "I don't even know what to say."

"You don't have to say anything," I murmured, picking at a thread in the blanket wrapped around my shoulders. "Just... don't tell Jasai... yet."

Samiyah's brows pinched gently, and she nodded without hesitation. "I promise, I won't. This stays between us."

I glanced up at her, grateful. There was something about her that always made me feel safe, like I didn't have to filter myself or pretend to be okay when I wasn't.

"I've been trying to stay clean... well, I have been staying clean," I said, my voice shaky like my soul was tryna walk a tightrope and not fall through. "I'm going to a program. I'm doing it, but... it's hard, Sami. Harder than I thought it would be. And Blaze, he's here, but—" I had to stop, had to swallow that thick lump rising in my throat before it turned into a full-blown cry. "It's like he's still deciding if I'm worth it."

Samiyah reached across the space between us and took my hand, her touch warm and steady, like an anchor when the waves inside me were gettin' too loud. "You are," she said softly, but her eyes held that no-nonsense shine she always carried.
