By the time we left from practice it was about six-thirty. Perfect time to catch a Dahlia. The girl barely stays home, despite her fathers attempts. The drive to Sue's was long and painful. Mainly because we all drove separate cars so we all couldn't gossip about how we felt or what might happen and it sucked. I keep unconsciously gripping the wheel, it's a habit of mine. When I'm nervous I clench and unclench my fist. For most people it's a sign of anger but for my it's my nervousness taking control. Why am I so nervous? I'm only talking about Gwen, not to her. Gah, I'm a wreck.
Sue'a cafe comes into view and my nervousness spikes. What if Gwen is here? Then what? Will she want to talk to me or will she continue to ignore me? We all pull into parking spaces right next to one another and head into the cafe, looking for the girl that has answers to question that we all have. Although she might not have them all, she still has more information on Gwen than we do so she's still needed. There she sits, facing the door as if she was waiting for our arrival.
We all make our way towards her as she sips on whatever she's drinking, looking smug as ever. "Oh wow, look who finally decided to show up. Making people wait isn't polite." Her face mirrors mock disappointment and when no one laughs, she gets serious.
"Okay you sticks in the mud, what do you guys want to know?" Before I can answer, Ren cuts in, saying everything which is very broad but dahlia doesn't fall back on her usual smart ass remarks, thank god.
"Uh okay. So yeah, I saw her I believe the day she left and she had some major attitude, let me tell ya. She refused to tell us where she was going and why she has stocked up on Energy drinks. We were gonna follow her but we had to pump our gas and what not but we did notice her traveling farther north.
"Now one of the first things that stuck out to us the most was that she was alone and if she did supposedly move with her family, why would she be going alone right? I mean, most of the time when families move they do it together but why was she alone? Her truck was filled too and I mean like her whole room was stuffed inside so something was definitely up."
God, why does she have to tell us every small detail. She's trying to write a novel when all we want to know is if Gwen's alright. Sighing, I choose not to interrupt and let her continue.
"Just like you guys, I stopped by her house but it was vacant so I assumed that she was just going ahead of her family and just being a loner and what not. But then, when I was dropping a friend off, I saw Samantha getting out out of her car and heading into the house and this is like two weeks after she was supposed to have left. I dropped my friend off, figuring that Samantha was making sure that it was ready to be sold but I was wrong.
"I parked my car and knocked on her door, excited at the idea of Gwen being back. When she opened the door she looked worse, alsmot as if she had stopped caring about herself. The place reeked of beer and it's just smelt awful. Anyways she and I got to talking and this is how I found out that she hadn't moved but Gwen did."
Gwen moved? On her own? Why and why hadn't she mentioned it to anyone else? Listening patiently, I wait for her to continue on with her narrative.
"Apparently, she was kicked out for being disrespectful or something. It had something to deal with Luke and Quinn but she really didn't venture that far into detail. We said our good byes and the whole thing kept playing over and over in my head, if she's been on her own for a good two weeks, how the hell has she been getting by, you know? I know she has all the money her parent left for her but who would willingly sell to a teenage girl they barely knew?"
This time it seems like she's asking all of us, herself included, for the answer. We sit in silence, pondering who could possible help her when Chrissy starts to laugh. We all look at each other, puzzled by her reaction until she begins to talk.
"I should have know. For weeks now, my mom and dad have been waking up early or leaving out late, claiming that they forgot something at the office. I never really paid much attention to it because you know we all have our own business except for the fact that my dad is a real estate agent." We all look at her, each trying to piece the puzzle together. "Why would he leave out late at night, hours on end, just to meet with a client? And my mother? She's a kindergarden teacher, there's no way in hell she should have business at night."
"So are you saying that your dad and mom have been helping her, without telling you?" I ask, making sure that I was right. She shrugs her shoulders saying that it's a possibility and we all fall silent again. A waiter stops by, the one that always speaks with Gwen, and asks us if we are ready to order, paying close attention to Chrissy.
"You're friends with Gwendolyn Hawthorne, correct?" I ask randomly, receiving a nod from him. "Have you spoken to her recently?" He ponders this for a moment and it's easy to see his internal debate. Finally he exhales, making eye contact with me.
"Yes. You're Jen right?" He studies me, his eyes saddening in the slightest before he speaks again. "She misses you." He offers a small smile before he leaves, leaving me shocked and the rest of the girls amazed.
~~~"So you'll talk to your dad?" I repeat for the hundredth time, getting the same answer. We all say our good-byes and for some reason, I'm happy. We're not sure if she truly lives on her own but the fact that we got somewhere is exhilarating. By the time I get home, my parents are sound asleep and the house is soothingly quite. Dragging myself up the stairs and into my room, I throw myself on the bed and doze of immediately.
Tomorrow will be a good day.
