At lunch, a french fry flies through the air and tangles itself in my ponytail. I whip my head around, trying to locate the culprit. If the fry came from the left, the southeast, the criminal has to be from the Hephaestus or Hermes tables. Most likely Hermes.
I use my eyes to shoot daggers at Connor Stoll, he's well known for pulling extreme pranks with his brother, Travis. Connor sees me from across the pavilion, and acknowledges my glare with a wave and a goofy smile. I know he did it. I don't usually seek revenge, I leave that to the children of Nemesis, but I weed the fry out of my hair, and hurl it in Connor's direction. It hits Travis who blames it on the girl across from him and starts a slap fight with her and her posse.
Something catches my eye at the Hephaestus table. It's Leo, goggles still over his eyes, tool belt wrapped around his hips. He's laughing. Him and the people sitting with him, they're all laughing! Snickers muffled with gloved hands make their way to my ears. I blamed the wrong person.
Calypso, sitting across from Leo, frowns in disappointment. I can see her lecture her boyfriend about maturity, responsibility, and safety. Calypso and I could be good friends, if she wasn't Leo's girlfriend. I still can't believe Leo Valdez has a girlfriend. I still can't believe Leo Valdez is alive.
During the battle with Gaea, Leo was blown out of the sky atop Festus, his metal dragon. That's how we finally defeated the Earth goddess. We thought that we had payed the ultimate price. No body or piece of bronze dragon was found anywhere. Everyone in the camp, especially the seven, was devastated. Even I, though I always found Leo's shinanagins annoying, couldn't bear to think that the once bright fire had dimmed to nothingness.
But five months later, Leo showed up, apparently back from the dead. He arrived with a fully functional Festus and Calypso, daughter of a Titan who he had rescued from her imprisonment on Ogygia.
Even Nico was surprised at Leo's sudden return. He felt a death on that tragic day, and no indication of life left within Leo's timeline. But this was the Hephaestus child's plan all along. People were suspicious at first, but I'm just glad to have him back. Calypso is a different story.
When she and Percy reunited, both of their hearts broke all over again. Now they avoid each other, and as Percy's girlfriend, I'm expected to do so too.
