Dedicated to KatMora606 for getting me back into my writing :)
"Aang what have you done?" Sokka questioned, kneeling before his younger sister.
"She was attacking me. She wouldn't speak to me. I didn't even know you guys were here!" he rushed to explain. The last thing he wanted was anyone else against him.
"Zuko is fighting Azula. We managed to escape to come find Katara. Azula had some man put a curse on her," Suki calmly explained. She was already examining and positioning herself to attempt to restart Katara's heart.
Aang walked over to Katara and kneeled beside her body. He took her hand as a pregnant Suki compressed her chest. Aang watched anxiously as Sokka took over. He couldn't believe he had hurt Katara. He didn't understand what had came over her. Now he knew all too well. This was Azula's plan all along. To get him to hurt the one thing he cared about the most. And he had fallen for it.
A small squeeze from Katara's hand brought Aang out of his thoughts. He looked down and found her chest had begun to rise and fall on its own. His eyes filled with tears as he lifted her fingers to his lips. She was waking up. They watched closely to see what she would do. Would she attack him again? Or was the curse gone.
Slowly she sat up, taking in her surroundings. She first looked at Sokka and a small smile came across her face. Next, Suki. The same reaction when Katara took in her pregnant belly. Finally her eyes rested on Aang. A look of hurt replaced the smile that had previously graced her face. She wasn't happy, but she wasn't attacking him either.
"Katara, I'm happy you're awake but we have to get out of here before Azula finds us," Sokka urges.
Katara only nods and begins to stand. She looks as though she might fall. Aang reaches out to steady her but as soon as he makes contact with her arm she pulls away as if shes been stung.
"Don't touch me," she says calmly. They begin to walk back towards the directions of where Zuko was fighting Azula.
At least she wasn't speaking that horrible language anymore. But she was mad. Surely she had to understand why Aang had done it. His heart shattered as soon as she hit the wall but it wasn't because he wanted to hurt her. She had to know.
The group walked through the catacombs until the reached yet another large opening. Aang felt a pang of guilt as he recognized the place where he fell, bringing the Earth Kingdom down with him.
"This is where they were fighting earlier," Sokka said. "Let's find them and help Zuko finish this once and for all."
As they began their search, a loud crash sounded overhead. Toph and Haru fell through with Zuko between him.
"Zuko! What happened?" Katara rushed forward. He was bloodied from the obvious battled that had ensued when he came upon Azula.
"Azula, she's gone," he mumbled. He fell between Toph and Haru. Katara quickly knelt to begin healing him. Aang stepped forward with a grimace.
"Did you see where she went?" he asked.
"No, Aang. She's gone. She's dead." Zuko replied from the ground. He grunted in pain as Katara moved the water over his bare chest.
The group fell completely silent, looking between each other not sure what to do next. Azula. Gone. No more threats from what was once one of their biggest. Aang felt relief. The fact that Katara and his friends were safe was a blessing but what about Azula. He hadn't wanted her to die.
"Are you okay?" Katara asked.
"I will be. Just get me out of here," Zuko responded heavily.
Haru and Sokka hoisted him up between them. The group headed back towards Appa to return to the Fire Nation.
Three Days Later
Katara walked the halls of the Fire Nation palace once again. She had dreaded the conversation but knew it needed to happen. She had avoided Aang since she healed Zuko and knew tensions were beginning to rise. She opened the doors to her room and sure enough Aang was sitting on her bed, staring out on the balcony.
"Hi, Aang," she said softly.
Aang spun quickly to face her. He had been trying to apologize for days but could never catch her at the right moment.
She held a hand up as he walked towards her. She didn't want him close. She was still mad. Not because he had hurt her physically. She understood he was defending himself. But she couldn't get over the thing with Maya.
"Katara, I'm sorry. I didn't mean to hurt you, you were attacking me and speaking in that ancient language. I couldn't understand what was happening," Aang begged. Katara deemed he was being genuine about this.
"Aang, I'm not mad about that. Really. I understand," she spoke. Aang's face lit up. "But I can't forgive what you did to Maya. You got her pregnant and then abandoned her. I can't be that woman."
Aang's face fell. Sadness and then confusion washed over him. Maya couldn't have been pregnant. At least not by him.
"Katara, I don't think you understand. There's no way I could've gotten Maya pregnant," Aang said.
Katara huffed. She hadn't expected him to blatantly lie about it.
"I'm sure that's what you want the chances to be, but whenever you do those things, babies happen!"
"No, Katara, really. We didn't ever do THAT. I found out she had lied about hurting you and I couldn't be with her after that. I love you, Katara." Aang pleaded.
Katara couldn't argue with the look on Aang's face. He was telling her the truth. That's all she had wanted. To know Aang was true to her. She felt a surge of happiness hit her. She smiled at Aang and walked towards him. Two strides later Aang had embraced her, letting everything melt away into her arms. He was going to be okay. He and Katara would be okay. He could finally get the girl.
