Parenthetical

I prefer text.

Speech is difficult to follow.

In speech, it's easy to miss the parentheticals.

Specifically, the squeezed-in threats like

"(remember that)".

(Remember that)

Easy to spot in text;

Easy to hear in speech,

But harder to pinpoint.

In text, they leap off the screen.

In speech, they are buried in an avalanche of words,

Leaving behind some vague, unexplainable,

Seemingly unjustifiable fear,

Hidden, but still present, still there,

Still pressing against consciousness,

The monster-shadow in the dark.

Speech requires a speedier processor than I have,

Especially when I can't trust in memory.

With text, I can take my time,

Dig through the petrified earth

To find the skeletons of monsters,

To see how the pieces fit within the whole,

And so say, "There you are."

That's why I prefer text.
