While I tried to change the frequency on the small device in my hands, Miranda kept pacing back and forth in front of me, making it hard to concentrate.
"Could you please stand still in just one minute?" I hissed, frustratingly trying to do as I was told by her moments ago.
"Just change the frequency," she retorted, not stopping in her track once.
I fought the urge to roll my eyes and went back to the walkie-talkie.
After a few minutes I finally managed to understand how the little thing worked. And when I first had realised how, it didn't take me long to change the frequency.
"Done!" I exclaimed, proudly handing the device back to Miranda.
"Not bad. Maybe it was a great thing that I saved you after all," she said, clicking on a few bottoms on the walkie-talkie.
The device came with a scratching sound, causing Miranda to tap on it in impatience. After a few seconds, a scratching voice was heard from the speaker, startling the three of us.
"Hello... Miran... is it you?" a deep voice said. It kept fading in and out.
Even though the device changed his voice a bit, you could still hear the heavy Scottish accent.
Miranda quickly lifted the walkie-talkie in front of her face, a big grin on her face.
"Hey, Paul! Yeah it's me. Can you hear me?" she asked, hope laced to her voice.
A few moments went in silence, before the voice returned.
"I... you. But the signal... and goes. Why the... you calling me... the radio?"
"We ran into trouble," she said, licking her lips.
"We? Miranda if... have picked up... random kids I swear..."
"It's okay Paul. They helped me. Actually, they are the reason I have contact to you now."
She glanced at me and Sam, before returning to her conversation with the man named Paul.
"We need someone who can distract some guards. Those bastards are blocking all exits in the building."
"Miranda..."
"Please Paul," she begged, tightening her grip on the black device.
"This is the last chance we have. And if we don't get out, this whole thing has been for nothing. If we die, the information we have dies with us."
A long time passed in silence. I began to think that Paul had cut the signal and leaved us to ourselves. A feeling of defeat fell over me, when Paul's voice suddenly was heard again.
"Don't... me regret... Miranda."
Miranda's face lit up by the sound of Paul's voice.
"Trust me. You won't. Thank you Paul."
A sigh came from the speaker of the walkie-talkie.
"I'll send five... and a van to... place, and they better all... back, when you return."
A soft click came from the device when Paul cut the signal. I let out a breath I didn't even realised I was holding. Maybe we could get out after all.
"So, they'll come here and pick us up?" Sam asked, hope in his eyes.
"Paul never breaks his promises," Miranda said flatly, quickly looking at me and Sam.
"We need to get to one of the exits. Paul's men can be here any seconds. If he sends someone who is close to our location," she added.
"Great..." Sam muttered sarcastic, putting his hands on his hips.
