"So how does it work?" Cherry sat forward. "I uh... they're spheres and-"
"That's a bubble, new girl." She cut you off.
"No they're like balls, they can be solid or hollow an-"
"Do they float?" Sitting back, her legs and arms crossed. "Well, yeah but-"
"Then those are bubbles." You let out a defeated sigh. I...am losing this battle. "Keep explaining." Cherry impatiently motioned for you to continue. "Okay." You took a deep breath. "I can make "bubbles". They can float or not-"
"Can you control which does what?"
"Yes." You nodded. "And the color for the most part." I see. This is the interview. Thanks, I hate it. "What do you mean by that?" She asked and raised an eyebrow, curiosity clearly hitting new peaks with every detail. "Once it's made I can't change the color." You answered.
"What about the size?"
"....Yeah." you looked away. "What's the problem?" Cherry pushed. You were surprised at how straight forward your new coworker and boss were. Are they all like this? Damn. You let your bubble pop, its glittery remains falling slowly, and held yourself close. "Earlier...I was saying it's not that strong right now because I'm tired and I don't really eat like I should. Stress and lack of energy, basically. I can, though. Change the sizes. I can move them too."
Your eyes burned a hole in the floor as you explained, unable to see the concerned look washing over Cherry's face. "Let's get some food in you then. I want to see what you can do." She pushed up and off the couch. "Huh?" Your head snapped up. "I said let's go get some food in you." She tugged at her earlobe and turned for the door. "Listening skills, friend. Follow me."
"This is a good chance for you to meet your new family." You trailed behind your trainer through a pair of metal double doors, leading you into a kitchen. Bright lights reflected off the stainless steel everything and the smell of fresh produce filled the room.
"This," she presented an older, graying man. "Is Bonhomie." You watched as skillful hands sliced through a pile of tomatoes, the male's attention focused on his cutting. "Bon!" Cherry raised her voice. "Huh? What?" His eyes cut to her, hands still moving with urgency. Wow. "We've got a new addition." Her head motioned to you while you waved shyly. "Ah! Hello there!" Bonhomie grinned, you gave a small one back. "Hi."
"So what has Koji decided to name you?" He asked, putting away his prepped work. "Uh...Siren?" You turned to Cherry, unsure if that was your new name or if Koji was just calling you that.
"Uh, yeah." She teased. "How nice. I'm excited to have more help around here." Bonhomie said, now cleaning the counter. He doesn't stop working, I like him. "You think you can whip something up for her? She's dying of starvation over here." Cherry pointed at you with her thumb. "Oh it's not that bad." You rolled your eyes. "Don't listen to her, she hasn't eaten in days." She continued, Bonhomie nodded. "Not a problem. What would you like, dear?" Uuuuuuh. You shrugged hard. "Surprise me?" Bon finally made eye contact with you. His violet...navy...indigo- What fucking color is that? - irises were striking. Wow. "Say no more."
"Thank yo-"
"Thanks, Bon!" Cherry set a guiding hand on your back leading you to the door. "Ah and you don't have to." She made a sprinkling charade with her fingers. "I know." He nodded and got to work.
"Doesn't have to what?" You asked, being led out to the main room. "Bonhomie has a pretty cool quirk." The two of you took seats at the bar. "What is it?" You questioned. "I was getting there. He can literally make people happy and euphoric with his food."
"Oh shit!" You grinned. "Right? It's the best when the mood is dead in here. It's rare, but it happens."
"Well, what's your quirk?" You asked curiously, Cherry shrugged. "I don't have one."
"Oh." Your body language mirrored hers. "That's cool too."
"Eh, some of them are overrated if you ask me." She reached over the bar, feeling around until she found a remote. "Think so?"
"Oh yeah." She pointed it to one of the TV's that hung above your heads and cut it on. "It really depends on the person I guess." She flipped through the channels quickly. "Wait wait! Go back!" You flailed wildly. "Calm down!" She giggled. "Back to what?"
"The news, I think they're talking about that thing again." Cherry eyed you before scrolling back. "What thing?"
"There's been a few homicides recently." You sat forward in your chair. "Oh yeah! I saw something about that. The psycho that cuts off the victim's hands right?" You shook your head, watching intently. He got someone else... "Just the pinky and ring finger." You weren't going to deny being a bit scared. Sleeping in your car now of all times didn't put you at ease. The bulk of the victims were heroes. Newbies, fresh meat, hot on the scene and never stood a chance. Some were still civilians though. The thought was enough to cover you with goosebumps.
"There's no pattern." Cherry spoke up as you watched. "This has got to be driving the police insane."
"I know...he hadn't hit anyone in months too. I don't get it." You sighed. Damn I need to get it together fast.
"Here you are, madame!" Bonhomie came bursting through the door behind the bar. Promptly scaring the shit out of you and Cherry. "Shit, Bon! You're gonna give me a heart attack!" The redhead clutched her invisible pearls. "You should see a doctor if it's so simple." He grinned and set a heavy plate in front of you. It was okonomiyaki and it was thick.
"Damn." Your eyes widened. "Damn is right, new girl. Eat up."
