Chapter 18 – A Chapter of the Past
In the borders of the Sky Village, near the big mountains lies a small village. There, a beautiful baby girl was born. She had her mother's smooth, fair skin, and her father's hazel eyes. Yet she was born with brown hair, unlike her parents who both had black hair. Her parents didn't mind the difference and it wasn't significant to them since she was still their child, a being they promised to love and care for. The girl was raised well because of her parent's status in the village. Her father was the head of the hunters, in charge of finding food and resources for the villagers. Her mother, on the other hand, was the daughter of a member of the councel in the village. The family was full of love, and the girl grew strong and healthy.
That was until wings started growing on her back. The girl was playing around the forest when she fell off a cliff. Before she knew it, a pair of wings appeared on her back and she was floating instead of landing on the ground. She went back to the village, not knowing what to do. But the villagers immediately stared at her in fear and horror. And since then, no children in the village would play with her and the adults would look at her in disgust. She would run back to her mother, crying and asking why she was the only one with wings. And her mother would reply with soothing words. 'God gifted you with a pair of beautiful, strong wings because he loves you." But as time passes by it became difficult for her to think that the foreign part of her body was anywhere near a gift. She thought it was unfair that she was the only one who had it.
When she turned 4, her wings grew even larger and she was given a set of powers. That frightened the village even more. The head of the village brought her to the council, and being a religious man, he would pray regularly, in an attempt to stir away the so called devil in her body. Her father, worried about his image ignored his own daughter, pretending as if she never existed in the first place.
But her mother, loved her even more, embracing her as it is. She was her fort, her home, the place she returns to whenever she needed to feel safe. As she grew older she disliked the gods even more. They seemed to never show her mercy. But that dislike quickly turned to hate when they decided to take her mother away from her.
It was during her 6th birthday. Her father was given the task to kill her by the village council. The village wasn't having a good harvest since the rainy season ended way too soon, so there weren't enough water circulating through the village. The people believed that it was because she was still alive, that's why the curse has affected the village. Her father, who had no attachment left for his daughter didn't feel any emotions when he heard of the task. But he thought of his wife and how devastated and disappointed she would be if she heard of what he was about to do. So he decided that he was going to stage his daughter's death.
That night, when everyone was asleep, he went to his daughter's room, a sword in hand. He opened the door silently. As he stood right next to her bed, he started to question if what he was doing was right. 'Why did you have to be born this way? If only you were normal, we would've lived happily, together.'
He raised his sword, and as he brought the weapon down, a scream was heard behind him. He didn't have to turn around to know that it was his wife. His wife ran over to him and pulled his hand away. "What do you think you're doing?" she was horrified. She knew her husband looked serious when he went home in the evening, but she would've never expected him to kill their daughter. "There's no other way Mi Rae." Her husband whispered. "What does that even mean?!" she immediately regretted raising her voice since the little girl woke up. "Mommy?" she asked, confused, as she rubbed her eyes in hope to get a better vision of the situation. "Honey, I need you to go to the living room, okay?" the poor girl, just nodded her head, still confused as to what was going on. She stumbled out of her bed and was halfway through the room. "I'm sorry Mi Rae" the male pushed his wife out of the way and rushed to the young girl. He quickly slashed his sword down, metal meeting skin. There was blood everywhere, but it wasn't from the little girl. Her mother was hugging her, as a result a wound marked her skin, from her shoulder to her lower back. The man fell down on his knees, he couldn't believe he attacked the love of his life. "No.. it wasn't supposed to be like this" he cried. His wife laid limp on the floor, half conscious. Meanwhile, the young girl stayed put, all she saw was blood. He mumbled to himself multiple times as tears streamed down his face. He lifted the sword that was still in his hands. He gave the little girl one last look before he sliced his own throat, ending his life.
It was as if she wasn't asleep a few seconds ago, because she felt awefully awake at that moment. She shook her mother, as she tried to desperately wake her up, but she knew her mother wasn't with her anymore. She let out a choked sob. "Mom.." And right there, her world crumbled down. She doesn't have a purpose to live anymore it was taken right in front of her eyes.
An hour later, the chief barged through the doors and he was stunned when he saw what was in front of him. He expected a young girl, dead, instead it was two important figures in his village. A young girl hugging her mother bathed in blood. He decided that she was to be contained, so he locked her in a cell, chained to the walls to prevent her from escaping.
The girl ended up spending 10 years locked in the dark cell. Her wings had dents as the chains dug into it daily. Her feet were swollen and bruised from the restraints, and her bones were visible in places it shouldn't be.
She wondered if there was even a god anymore. And if there was, then she pondered why they didn't answer her prayers, and why they never helped her in anything. Shouldn't a god be just and fair?
So she made herself believe that there was no god in this world. There was, afterall, no proof to her that he existed.
'God? What a load of shit'
