Two weeks ago, when Joe first met Chloe in that movie theater lobby, he had felt incredibly low and he didn’t want any consolation. But then along came the girl that would change everything. Surprisingly enough, he had known it right away. He had known, right away, that he and this girl needed to be together. That he would be with her forever. That he would never be bored in her presence, that he would never turn down an opportunity to be with her, and that he would love every single second he spent with her.
So it was no surprise to him that he was enjoying himself greatly while having Chloe over to his house for the day. They were currently in the backyard, playing Frisbee with his brothers, his parents looking on from their comfortable spot on the deck. Today, rather than an intense game of Ultimate Frisbee or simple keep-away, they were all just throwing the Frisbee around to one another. Fun and easy.
Joe had just gone inside to grab some lemonade, per his mother’s suggestion, and now stepped out onto the deck, stopping for a second just to watch. To watch the way his parents sat on their chairs on the deck, holding hands, pleased with the girl he had chosen. To watch the way Kevin and Nick smiled at each other when they thought no one was looking, finally understanding who this incredible person was that had completely won over their brother. To watch Frankie laugh uncontrollably when Chloe playfully tackled him in an attempt to stop him from getting the Frisbee. The sun was shining down on him, he had his girl, and a loving family. Nothing could get better.
“Hey, anybody want to take a break? I have the lemonade.” Joe set down the tray he had brought out, and smiled as everyone trooped over towards him. “Don’t worry, I taste-tested it, and it’s pretty good, if I do say so myself.”
His brothers began to help themselves to the drink, while Chloe walked up to Joe and smiled at him. She said nothing, just gave him that quick, small smile, which conveyed everything he needed to know. She was enjoying herself just as he was. He smiled back, and grabbed her hand, squeezing it just the tiniest bit.
“Did you want some lemonade?” he asked her, lacing his fingers with hers.
“I would love some,” she replied, squeezing his hand back.
After they were all situated on the deck in their chairs and with their drinks, the real questioning began. The Jonas family only accepted the best to date their sons, and the Mr. and Mrs. Jonas needed to know just about all they could to make sure this girl was right for their son. The only thing they asked her about that Joe hadn’t already discovered was just how big of a Jonas Brothers fan she was (she had been a fan for a little over a year, been to one concert, owned both albums), although that hardly mattered to him now. He did find it an interesting thing to think about, though; the fact that she had been standing in a crowd that he was performing for and he didn’t even notice her or realize an amazing girl was in front of him. But all that mattered now was that she was his.
And from the looks of it, his parents weren’t about to try to stop him from having her. Chloe answered their every question in the most perfect way, so that they could hardly think of ever saying no. They each saw that presence she had, that way about her. She wasn’t the one your eyes would immediately be drawn to when you first walked in a room; yet once you saw her, it was hard to tear your eyes away. She wasn’t the person that everyone knew, or wanted to be friends with, or wanted to be. She was her own person; she wasn’t like everyone else. But at the same time, she was just a girl. Simple as that. But in his parent’s words, she was “exquisite”. Joe couldn’t agree more. And later that night, after she left, they gushed to Joe about what a wonderful young lady she was.
Once they all finished their lemonade, they resumed their Frisbee playing. The easy throwing of the Frisbee back and forth soon turned into a show of which Jonas brother could throw the Frisbee in the craziest way. Chloe laughed uncontrollably at some of the crazy things they did.
