As Nick left his class to go to lunch that Thursday, Lem jumped on him and surprised him like he always did.
"What's up loser?"
"Oh, hey there Lem."
"Dude, let's get Alan and get out of here." Lem said waving his hand toward the door. Nick smiled and gave him a look only the two knew.
"Ditch?"
"Say less, man," Lem smiled. Lem and Nick went and got Alan and left the school. The three drove around in Alan's jeep and went down the field and laid out on the grass between home plate and the pitching mound. They laid out burgers they had gotten before arriving and began eating.
"Nick, how's it going with Abby?" Alan asked. Nick silently tilted his head as he had a mouth full. "Oh, c'mon, we know you're interested in her."
"I just want to get to know her, yeah know?"
"Mmm. Then I should tell you the info I have on her then." Lem said then taking a bite into his burger. Nick sat up immediately.
"Wait, what? What do you know?"
Lem smiled, "I found out who she is and where she came from." Nick waved his hands wildly.
"Well! Spit it out!"
"Derek's ex-girlfriend." Lem said. Alan sat up as well.
"Hold up. You mean that ass from Barbara High?" Alan asked. Lem nodded. Nick sat quietly and put his burger down as he began to think.
"Didn't something bad happen between them? I remember hearing something about Derek and his girl a few months ago or something," Nick ranted.
"If so, it explains her actions when you try to talk to her," Alan pointed out.
"Wait Lem," Nick blurted out, "How'd you find this out? She won't even talk to us." Lem laughed.
"I have my ways."
Lem was well known at Barbara High with the ladies hence why he was so hated by the guys there including Derek. Regardless if they had a boyfriend, Lem would still flirt as if they didn't. I guess you can say Lem was just a big flirt.
"Makes you want to know more, huh?" Lem teased. Nick nodded as Alan chuckled.
"I always see Robert trying to get at her in history." Alan said after sipping his drink. Nick turned to him.
"And?"
"She just ignores him," he laughed.
Robert is the stereotypical jerk. He was the guy to have two girlfriends at once or event the guy to date his ex-girlfriend's best friend just because he could, but the one thing everyone loved about Robert was that he knew how to throw a party. He invited the whole senior class almost every weekend. Nick would go every time though he never drank. As he always put it, Lem did the drinking for the both of them.
As the weekend came sooner than ever, the boys decided they were going to Robert's massive party. They rode in Nick's truck as they usually did. He was always the designated driver.
Nick drove the truck up against the curb and parked. Music was blaring from the two story tan house. Lem stood next to Nick and nodded.
"Seems decent." Alan laughed. They entered the house to their whole bodies vibrating from the blaring music. The group of people with red plastic cups remained dancing throughout the house. Lem walked forward into the crowd holding up his hand.
"Hand me a beer!" He shouted as he disappeared into the swarm of people as they all cheered for him arriving. Nick shook his head and followed him through the crowd of people. They walked through the house and into the backyard where there were even more people. The backyard was surrounded by high white stoned walls with a pool which sat dead middle of the yard.
