Ravanna's POV
I let out a stuttered breath after I responded to Kassandra and looked back to Lucifer.
"What doth thou intend? How goes't after her? How doth thy wot about her?"
He pauses before he speaks, "Careful, Ravanna, you're slipping into your old English habits."
I bare my teeth at him, "This is not a joking matter, Lucifer."
He sighed, "I think that they've always known. I think they've know since after her mother died, since they've cursed her father. I believe that they've given her this life on purpose, because - to them- she was tainted the day she was born."
"She is not tainted," I say. I have heard her thoughts several times on the matter, I don't care of what we're speaking of at the moment and I don't need Lucifer to believe that she's tainted as well, I need him to understand.
"She is many things, but she is not tainted."
He looks upon me with a new regard and softly smiles, letting out a huff of laughter and agrees.
"She's not tainted."
We were both silent for a moment before I asked, "What does it mean that she is a halfling?"
"Back when God first created the Earth, when he created animals and such he actually encouraged the merge of human and angels. It was 'the spread of love and faith' as he called it. That merge had created a generation of halflings - a combination of two things that god loved very dearly. But when they came of age, they grew unstable."
My thoughts revolved around Kassandra, "What doth thou mean, unstable?"
Lucifer hesitated and it made me all the more cautious and concerned.
"They grew insane, Ravanna," he said tiredly, "They had a constant battle ongoing in their mind- one side light and one side dark- as cliche as it seems" Lucifer almost whispered at this.
Insane?
"Why would they go insane?" I dare ask.
He sighed heavily at this, "Angels were made to be pure. Pure of heart, mind, and body; humans... well they have flaws. Because of the seven deadly sins, it corrupted an angel like mind set, some caused the start of wars while others fought for justice. But in the end... it was like they forgot what side they fought on."
What did this mean for Kassandra? Will this happen to her?
I did not get the chance to ask as Lucifer went on.
"They had become such a huge threat to those around them, they caused mayhem and havoc, they killed innocents and unleashed power that had been previously unknown. It destroyed the balance, they destroyed life."
"Heaven decided that they could not be trusted. God had forbidden all angels from having contact with humans for they feared it would be the end of their reign and for an angel to have conceived a child with one, despite the rule..... well.."
I had never put any thought into what heaven did, I had always just assumed that they thought themselves to be righteous.
"But how could she end their reign? Why now? What could be so important that they are after Kassandra now?"
Lucifer stood there and looked to me with an almost... guilty expression.
I have seen him put fear and sorrow into others, I have seen him unflinchingly torture someone to the point of insanity. But I have never once seen him show any sort of compassion, especially guilt.
