A week later

My eyelids slowly squinted open as I tried my best to adjust to the creeping sunlight in the room.
I then felt my heart jolt out of my chest as my phone began vibrating on the dresser. I lifted my hand and slapped my phone, "go way," I groaned, "I don't want to get up!"

"Is that anyway to greet your bestfriend?"

I snapped my head, "D?"
I fluttered my eyes open and grabbed my phone off the floor almost causing myself to topple of my bed in the process, "what's up!"

"Do I need an excuse to call you?"

"No," I hesitated, "but you always have one." I chuckled as I got out of bed slowly and walked into the bathroom with my phone in hand.

Standing in front of the sink, I took out my tooth brush, applied a small amount of toothpaste and put it in my mouth.

"How's New York?"

"Gud ..buh ..busay." I mumbled through the foam in between my teeth.

"What?"

I spat out the contents of my mouth, "Good but busy." I repeated.

"Oh, you brushing your teeth?"

I rolled my eyes as I rinsed my mouth, "no I'm just sticking random objects in my mouth."

"You're wha-"

I sighed whilst choking back my own laughter, "you know what forget I said anything."

"You working today?"

I walked back into my bedroom and searched through my closet whilst trying to balance my phone between my ear and shoulder, "yes, got to leave in 20 minutes."

I pulled out an outfit and laid it out on the bed.

"Oh in that case I'll call you later, see you Nat."

"Bye D." I heard the call end as I quickly got changed. I grabbed an apple as I left the house hastily in a daze.
I rushed through the New York traffic and made to work in 15 minutes. Record time if you ask me.

I slammed the car door behind me as I jogged up towards the entrance of the department, strolled in passing a few worried faces at my rushed pace, clambered up the stairs and into the office.

"There she is! You took your time." Nora giggled.

I hung my coat behind my chair and logged into my computer, "sorry bout that,
woke up late." I apologised.
Lilly laughed, "we all do it don't worry."

I searched through my email, deleting the non important ones and keeping the relevant ones. The girls were doing the same, I think. I heard the shutting of a door followed by pairs of footsteps.

"There you are Nat."
I snapped my head up and saw Jonathon, Evan and another women standing by Jonathon's office.

I gave a small wave and smile.

There was a short pause, Jonathon cleared his throat, "Nat this is Deputy Hansen." He pointed towards the women next to him. She couldn't have been any older than 30. Her hair was short and she was fairly small compared to me. I wasn't even that tall, only 5'7.

She spoke up, "you must be the new one, Natalia right?" She held her hand out for me.

I shook it and nodded, "Yes ma'am."
She took a step back, "I'm assuming that you don't know why I'm here?"

I lifted an eyebrow, puzzled, "no, no I don't." Quite frankly, as long as she want firing me, I didn't care.

She peered over towards Jonathon and Evan before turning back to me, "you know that case you worked on last week, where you got hurt?"
