The smoke lifted hazily up into the midnight sky from our bonfire. I huddled under my blanket closer, chilled although the fire was warm and cozy. My dad was telling a story but I was distracted by the stars, the moon, and the boy who I was currently cuddling.

"Comfy much?" the brown haired guy I was cuddling chuckled showing his dimples. I sighed in annoyance.

"Oh really Steven?" I glanced back at the fire making sure my dad wasn't paying attention to me. Nope. Good.

"Yes, really...." he trailed off and then smiled evilly. Whenever he got that look it probably meant he would do something to annoy me.

"What now?" I felt like slapping the arrogant smirk of his face.

"Want to hear a blond joke?" he pulled my whitish blonde hair, and rolled it between his thumb and forefinger. I rolled my eyes in exasperation. He just wouldn't knock it off, I knew that from experience.

"Why not? It's not like they are in the middle of telling stories. Rude much." Of course, he just ignored me. Then again, I was such a hypocrite.

"How do you drown a blond?"

"How?"

"By putting a scratch and sniff sticker at the bottom of the pool." he chortled, "Isn't that a good one Riya-bug?" The only part that was slightly amusing was him using my nickname. Was it that hard to just say plain old Riya?

"Oh yeah sure; real original." I said sarcastically. I was so focused on what Steven was saying I didn't notice the person standing right by the fire was saying my name.

"Yes Dad?" I focused in on the storytelling now. Last I knew, he was telling a boring story about the Spirits of the Wind. Meh. All the younger children were amused but most of the teens broke off into their separate little groups and talked.

"Listen up-- this story pertains to you. Go ahead Susan." Susan was my mom and she was also Beta of the pack, and also the best story teller ever. If she talked you just had to listen. The wind blew shifting her hair and she smiled.

Susan, right next to my dad; Jack, stood up and cleared her throat. The way the fire danced in her eyes sent goosebumps down my spine. Besides me Steven was still laughing, and I couldn't help but ram my elbow into his side. He growled but lapsed into silence. Serves him right.

"Not so long ago, but before Riya was even born, the was a horde of bloodsuckers plaguing the land, and the only way to defeat them was to join all the packs together to vanquish the monsters."

There was a lot of growling that followed her intro. No one liked bloodsuckers.

"During this time the packs blurred into each other so much so that not even the oldest of wolves remembered exactly who was in their pack, and what pack they were in."

A lot of the children looked at each other in awe; they probably couldn't even imagine being in a different pack. I could, but then again I was pretty weird.

"Together they killed off the bloodsuckers and only a few got away. However, one of the higher ranking wolves in the joined pack died. Anger circled around and the pack started pointing fingers at one another. In order to keep the peace the other high ranking wolves got together and decided that it was best to establish separate packs once again." At this point she looked at Jack. "One of these people was your Alpha, Jack." He nodded at her to go on. "Once the packs came out they still were angry about the death of everyone's good friend so pack set upon pack. Everyone's pack was a rival to everyone else's." She smiled and nodded knowingly; "Of course it's been a while so there has been some allies that popped up, but for the most part most packs are rivals. Which would explain why Tribe Shadow Hunters are such big rivals with our pack; Tribe Roaring Moon." She concluded by sitting down.

Jack stepped closer to where I sat and his eyes almost plead with me. What was happening?

He said quietly, as if only to me; "Which is why Tribe Shadow Hunters has proposed a deal."

In my peripheral vision, Steven moved closer to me.

Jack stepped back a pace and spoke louder this time, "As you all may know Tribe Shadow Hunters are our biggest rivals. However, times have changed and they have proposed a deal in which we may be allies once again." Now he looked chagrined and embarrassed with what he had to say next. He took a breath; "They have proposed a deal in which Evan, the Alpha's only son marry into our pack."

I gasped wondering who the poor female wolf was. She would have to put up with Evan and his boring stuffy Alpha father; Devon. The only plus side I could see was Evan wasn't half bad looking. The contrast between his brown hair and red eyes created a mesmerizing trance. One he had probably used to trap many mortals. I shuddered. Sometimes wolves were definitely wolves.

Jack laughed nervously; "I have not yet accepted his offer, but I am highly considering it. This would really help our pack and would also help their pack."

Even I had to agree at this point. There was lots of tension between the packs and a marriage would fix it.

Jack turned to me: "Riya will you mate Evan for the good of our tribe and their's?"

My mouth dropped open: "Excuuuuuuse me?!?!?" I slurred the 'u' in excuse because Dear Lord I was shocked. Steven sprang up next to me. He stomped off growling and Jack sighed. I just sat there with a really dumb expression on my face.

"Look, I know that we've been pushing you to find a mate." Well, that was an understatement. Over the last couple of weeks they had been sending me off to random places to find a mate. And not always the most wholesome places either.

"Well, even though he's not technically your mate, you can still marry Evan....Please?" He was all but begging me. I could feel his Alpha dominance warring with my complete dislike for this plan.

I shook my head, not to tell him 'no' but to clear my head. "Please anything but that!" I begged. Then an idea popped up in my mind. "I know my true mate is out there somewhere-- Give me three weeks to find my mate and get acceptance from them. Please?" I knew Jack's hands were tied; he couldn't force me to mate Evan; and he also knew that I would want to make him happy. Not that I necessarily wanted to find my mate.. but it was custom.

"Alright three weeks.. and if you don't find your mate; you will marry.. er.. mate with Evan.. No complaints. We need this but I also need you to be happy." He smiled uncomfortably.

I bowed my head under his Alpha will. Even if I was his only child with royal blood running through my veins, I had to follow his command. Three weeks..... or Evan..........
