When I wake up, a very bright light is the first thing that annoys my eyes. When my eyes have gotten used to the light, I feel my face make a frown and I curl up in the bed.
'Where am I?' I mumble.
'Ah, babydoll, you're awake! Doctor, doctor, nurse! Come help us, she's awake!' I hear a high pitched female voice yell through the room.
'Oh sweetheart, how are you? Can you hear me Tess?' another, lower, manly voice says.
I curl around in my bed and look around. A man with glasses, grey hair and a suit sits next to me on a stool. The lady behind him is tearing up, her hand in front of her mouth, her eyes filled with happy tears.
'Oh my god Tessa, I don't know what to say...' she whispers.
That's when a nurse enters the room. She walks to the other side of my bed and takes my hand.
I frown again.
'Hi darling. Welcome to Toronto General Hospital. How are you feeling?' she asks. She has dark brown, straight hair, tied together in a ponytail in her neck. She isn't slim, but she looks gorgeous, even though her white nurse dress hides most of her body. She looks good.
'Uh...' I say. I roll my eyes and move my fingers. 'I'm very confused. What happened?'
'That's a long story Tess, you should probably get some rest,' the lady on the other side of my bed says. Her orange hair looks like a mess and under her eyes, her skin is carrying one of the biggest bags I've ever seen. She was also very pale.
'No mrs Black, it's okay,' the nurse smiles. 'You don't seem tired Miss,' she says to me then.
I just shake my head and shrug.
'Where is Luke?' I ask. 'Oh my god! Elizabeth? Walt? Toronto? But, what about Elmwood village, with the market? And the countryside?' I yell. 'Oh god, where is everyone? What the fuck happened to me? Can anyone tell me, now, please?'
The man on my right side just takes my other side and squeezes it softly.
'It's okay babygirl. You'll be fine, there probably just are nightmares haunting you,' he smiles.
'No, no, listen! I know Luke, and Walt, and Elizabeth, I was on the market and last thing I remember was...'
'Miss Black, you passed out three days ago. You've been in a light coma for three days Miss.' The nurse smiles. She still stands next to me and lets go of my hand. 'Look, all we know is that on the 21st of May this year, you went on a boat trip with Mr Irwin. Something terrible happened and Mr Irwin lost you over the edge,' the nurse continues. I see that the lady on my right side sits down in a chair and starts crying. The guy next to her, the one in the suit, sits down next to her and rubs her back. This is all so hella confusing. 'We all thought you hadn't made it, Miss Black. But three days ago, on the 2nd of July, someone found you in his book shop in Elmwood Village. They called 911, and one of the paramedics recognised you from the paper. He phoned the number written in the paper, and we flew you over to Toronto the same day. You're headliner news now Miss.'
I'm flabbergasted. All silent. What should I say? What the fuck, I traveled by plane and I didn't even notice? What the actual fuck?
'But... what about Luke?' I ask eventually.
'Who is Luke?' the lady in the chair asks back. I look at her. Her eyes are red from the tears, her face full of grief, sorrow, concern and other sad emotions I can't read.
'He's.... like a brother to me.'
'But you don't have a brother,' the man in suit answers. The lady next to him shushes him.
'I've got Luke though....' I sigh.
'Excuse me Miss, I have to go for now. Make sure you get some rest. Dinner will be served in an hour.' The nurse smiles, before she turns around and leaves the room.
'Where did you meet this Luke? In your dreams?' the man in suit asks.
I give him a dead glare before letting out a cough.
'Come on Thomas, don't,' the lady tells him. 'At least she can still give you the deadly glare.' A smile appears on the mans lips.
'So who are you exactly?' I ask, a frown forming on my forehead.
'Ah darling.... maybe the doctor was right...' The lady says before tears fill her eyes again.
'What?'
'He uhm...' the man starts. 'He said that you've lost your memory. Most of it, at least. You suffer from amnesia, Tess.'
'I know.' I say with a dry voice. 'I know, I figured on the 21st of May apparently.'
'Tessa...' the lady says before she stands up and sits down on the stool on the right side of my bed. I raise my eyebrows and look at her. 'Tessa, uhm.... do you really not know who we are?' she asks with a cracking voice. Her bottom lip is trembling and her face is very very serious.
I just shake my head.
'Does it look like I remember you? Like there is any recognition coming from my side?' I say. 'I wish I could say who you are... But all I remember is Luke and Walt and Elizabeth, and the calves,' I add.
The lady takes my hand.
'Tess.... we are your parents. I am mum. And this is dad,' she says, pointing and the man in suit behind her.
