"Rini has arrived, people!" Ash exclaimed, letting Nini and I in.
"Rini?" I responded, arching my eyebrows.
"It's your ship name." Big Red explained, as we walked into the living room that was set up perfectly for movie night.
"Ship, as in relationship?" Nini asked, just as confused as I was. Red and Ash both nodded in sync with each other. "Okay...?" Is all she said, as we grabbed a seat on the floor.
"You think there's enough blankets?" Ash asked, taking a look around the setup.
"Definitely." Nini and I answered in unison, laughing.
"Okay. Well, I'll work on snacks. You good being in charge of answering the door, Red?" Ash replied, walking towards the kitchen. He nodded and Nini decided it was time for a photo op.
"So, I wonder what movie Ash picked out for us." Nini said, putting down her phone.
"I bet we're gonna end up watching High School Musical." I guessed, putting my arm around her.
"But we've already watched it for one of our past movie nights." She countered, tilting her head.
"So far, we've only done the first and second. Maybe we'll be watching the third tonight." I replied, as she rested her head on my shoulder. Before she could say anything else, she was interrupted by the doorbell ringing.
"Welcome, EJ." Red said, letting him in.
"Thanks, Red." He said, looking at the setup. "Nice...Where's Ash?"
"In the kitchen, working on the snacks. Actually, you guys mind watching the door?" Red asked, which we all shook our heads to. He went into the kitchen to help Ashlyn, and EJ sat in one of the chairs.
"Either of you two know what we're watching?"
"Nope. That's, actually, exactly what we were discussing before you got here." Nini responded, shaking her head.
"I see. I interrupted the lovebirds." He commented, smirking. We both just rolled our eyes at him.
"I'm gonna head to the bathroom. Be right back." Nini said, giving me a quick kiss on the cheek and getting up. When she left, EJ and I just kinda sat in silence. After what he'd done on opening night, our issues with each other pretty much were resolved. He had stood in the way of me getting back with Nini for so long, and then with his selfless act, he proved there was no need for there to be any bad blood between us anymore. Still, we didn't exactly have a lot to talk about with each other. We were better off in a group.
Ding! Nini's phone lit up, but I left it. I was no EJ.
"Hmm. Interesting..." He said, glancing at the screen.
"EJ, what are you doing?" I questioned, furrowing my eyebrows.
"Nothing..." He lied, quite clearly pretending to stretch.
"EJ..." I said, as Nini's phone lit up again.
"I have no idea what you're talking about, Ricky."
"EJ, what is so interesting about Nini getting a message? It's probably just one of her moms making sure she got here okay." I said, confused.
"Sure..." He replied, slowly nodding his head.
"Stop it. You're trying to get me to look at her phone, aren't you? Well, I'm not you, EJ. I'd never look through her phone without her permission." I explained, crossing my arms.
"Can I at least tell you what it says? You wouldn't be looking through her phone. I just happened to see the messages and read them out loud, where you heard." He tried persuading me.
"It's none of my business, EJ. It's not yours either." I said, turning away from him.
"It's from a guy." He said, staring at her phone.
"La la la la la."
""How's Utah?" He read, as I tried my best to tune him out.
"La la la la la."
"Ugh I miss u cutie can't wait to see you at school Monday."
I froze. I wished I could erase that from my mind. I mean, I wasn't going to assume that Nini was cheating on me, because I know she'd never do that to me, but then what did the messages mean? Before I could say anything to EJ, Nini came back from the bathroom. EJ, quickly, put her phone back, and asked me a random question.
"Hey, babe." She greeted me, sitting back down with me.
"Hey..." I said, trying not to seem too off.
"Uh, your phone lit up, while you were in the bathroom. Didn't want to invade your privacy or anything so I just left it..." I told her, hoping I'd be able to get to see her reaction to the messages. EJ gave me a weird look, but Nini didn't seem to notice.
"Oh, thanks, babe. Probably just one of my moms." She replied, picking up her phone. She looked at the messages, smiled, and started typing. I wanted so much to know what she could be saying to this guy, but I also really didn't want to become one of those boyfriends. Relationships were meant to be all about trust, so I just had to trust her. I sat there, waiting. It wasn't too long, before she finished and put her phone down.
"Who was that?" I asked, praying she'd tell me the truth.
"Oh...Just Momma C making sure we got here okay." She lied, shrugging. She smiled and rested her head on my shoulder, but it just didn't feel the same.
