Melissa’s Point of View
Flashback:
“Hey, Chase!” I cheerful say as I answer the phone. “M-Melissa… I’m so sorry… I- I didn’t mean to, I swear!” Chase sobbed into the phone. I was barely able to understand him through his tears. “Chase? What do you mean? What happened?” I asked, heart beginning to pound as I recalled what I had told him days before. “I- I’m just so sorry.” He mumbled, hanging up the phone. “CHASE!?” I scream into the small device, desperate to know what he did, but he was already gone.
The pounding on our door violently ripped me from my needed slumber. I desperately reached over and grabbed my baseball bat, stumbling off our bed in the process. I glimpsed at the clock on my way to the door only to see that it was 1:30 in the morning. “Lissa? What was that pounding?” A small scared voice asked from our bed. “Elizabeth, everything is okay. Stay here.” I quietly made my way down the stairs towards the loud pounding, baseball bat in hand. The knocking on our front door becoming louder and louder.
As my hand shakily reached towards the doorknob, the door was busted in, violently shoving me out of the way as four large men stomped into our home. I rushed back to my feet, baseball bat swinging as I desperately tried to protect my family. I felt two large hands on either of my wrists as the bat was ripped from my hand. I kicked and screamed, desperate to get away from them. “MELISSA!” I heard a young voice scream from a distance. “LET HER GO!” Elizabeth rushed down the stairs, tears pouring from her eyes. I let out a scream as I watch two of them scoop her up, walking towards the door with my defenseless baby sister.
I kick at them as the two men holding me began dragging me towards the door. Stumbling out, my eyes become wide as I see the boy standing by the cop car. He looked at me with red swollen eyes. It was obvious that he had been crying. I instantly felt like I had left my body, and was viewing this from as a different person. Everything slowed down as I looked to Elizabeth, kicking and screaming as they put her in the car. I whipped my head back to the boy, my long brown hair slightly covering my face. I screamed at him with everything I had, and all he did was turn away, covering his face like a shameful coward. Chase.
