Chapter 21
When my song had finished the lights went out. Everyone stood looking around because the evening had gotten a little darker at half five.
“Don’t worry, I can fix it! I have a back-up plan for this.” I told everyone. Austin removed his hand from my waist, turned me around and...
“Happy birthday to you, happy birthday to you, happy eighteenth birthday dear Lexi, happy birthday to you...” Everyone sung and Mason had helped mum bring out the cake.
“Make a wish.” They all told me as the cake finally reached me, it was chocolate – my favourite, with icing and a big ‘18’ coated in sprinkles.
lowing out the candles with my eyes shut, I made a wish: I wish to find myself. I don’t know why I made that wish? It just came into my head.
Standing back up straight and saying ‘thank you’ to everyone, Riley commented on my necklace again. “I really do like your necklace!”
Austin peered over me to have a look and then suddenly spun me round and asked, “Where did you get that?”
“Err... um...” I tried to find the words.
“Wherever, whenever... always.” He whispered.
“Yeah, how did you know that was engraved...?”
“Where did you get it?” He was now panicking.
“My box, the one I found in the attic. It was locked but then your key opened the little box it was in...” feeling his panic had made me find the words.
“I know my key opens it!”
Then Mike thought it was an appropriate time to step in, “Austin how’s the arm?” He rocked forward and back.
“Not now Mike!” I warned him.
“Oh and how is your back, might I add?”
“What, how do you know about the bruises on his arm and back?” I became very intrigued. “How did you know he slipped and walked into a gate?”
“That’s what he told you!” Mike laughed, “Unless my fist is a gate baby he’s lying to you.”
“What? Do you two know each other?”
“Yeah we met yesterday when he was out buying that stupid suit for you.”
“Austin... is this true?”
“Yes, it’s true. We got into a fight because he started saying stuff about you and him and...”
“I’ve heard enough!” I stormed away from him because I knew that wasn’t the only thing he was lying about.
“Lexi!” he was running after me, so I ran faster to the only place I could think to go – the garden.
I slammed the garden door shut and there was a lock on the inside so I locked it.
“Lexi, I didn’t tell you because I didn’t want you to worry!” He yelled from the outside.
I sat down by the lake, took my shoes off and just cried like my eyes were waterfalls. Taking off my necklace, I looked at the engraved words, “Wherever, whenever... always, yeah right!”
Before I could say ‘I should have known,’ I fell down. My head hit the ground hard and it went black again. It was the little girl again but this time her face wasn’t blurry it was the girl I saw in the pictures and the boy placed the necklace around her neck and said, ‘happy birthday, Lexi. Promise to see me tomorrow!’ The girl replied, ‘Of course I will.’ The boy whispered ‘I love you, wherever, whenever...always.’ Then the little girl muttered, ‘love, pft.’ Then when she approached the house – my dad’s house – her parents were arguing. Her mum’s and her bags and suitcases were packed and they left walking very fast to the street where we got fish and chips from. Just like last time, the mum was packing the bags and suitcases into the car and the girl played with her necklace, she tried to catch it when it fell and picked it up from the road and when she screamed it didn’t wake me up from whatever the vision or dream was. Suddenly I realised the vision were I felt like I was trapped was of the little girl in hospital – in a coma. That also explains the beeping sound. Then I heard ‘Lexi? Lexi wake up?’
