Chapter 25
I felt like I was choking and my body – even though it was shattered and aching – was fighting for survival. My body then calmed down. Was I dead or alive? I don’t know. Lost or trapped? I don’t know. Was I Blind or crazy? I seriously don’t know!
All of a sudden the choking feeling vanished and I felt water brushing past my legs. I was standing in a river and around this circle of light were four other rivers flowing into it. I felt the urge to walk into it. In the river I wasn’t alone, other people floated down the rivers. Just before I reached the light I froze. My legs wouldn’t move, then my hips wouldn’t twist – neither would my waist. My fingers were glued shut; I couldn’t raise my arms to signal for help. My head couldn’t turn, my mouth was stuck and my eyelids grew heavy and eventually shut. Beginning to panic (in my mind), darkness fell again.
After what seemed like an hour of silence, ‘BEEP.’ I almost leaped with joy – if I could. ‘BEEP’ I knew exactly what the sound was; it was the sound of me being alive. 'BEEP.'
Now and again I would drift unconscious but I could hear muffled voices – still not being able to move. 'BEEP.' I could tell there were five people near me. At one point I managed to make out someone saying “she’s doing well, she should wake up any day now.” But I was awake? What was that person talking about?
'BEEP'.... 'BEEP.'
“Do you think she’ll remember us?” a female voice asked.
“I don’t know but at least she’ll wake up” Said another female voice.
“Maybe then we can find out what happened.” A male voice stated.
"Yeah, I guess so." Said the first female voice.
"She will definately remember you sweetheart" an more mature female's voice whispered loudly.
'BEEP.'
“Well the police informed us that there was no evidence to perform an investigation. The car Lexi was driving is so smashed up, they can’t extract anything. The cameras saw it but the car who jumped the red light had painted over their number plate in black. It was as if they wanted to hurt her on purpose – or kill her – and the police said the hit-man would have removed the paint by now. I'm sorry, there's nothing else that anyone can do unless the hit-man himself steps forward” Said an even deeper voice.
'BEEP.'
“Come on guys, let’s get some lunch before she wakes up and you too Austin, you need to eat.” A third female voice had suggested.
'BEEP.'
I wanted to cry but I couldn’t. I wanted to tell them I do remember. Mum, Riley, Ashley, Emma and Austin had been talking about me. With that I forced my eyes open. Looking around, I was in a hospital bed, I forced my fingers free and as if my fingers were the source, I was able to move the rest of my body. I still couldn’t find the words to speak. But I was so exhausted, I fell asleep.
'BEEP.'
Later I woke up and found Mike sitting next to my bed.
“Hey,” he said as I sat up, “your mum and dad went to get you some clothes because the doctor said you had woken up but was just sleeping.”
Looking at him blankly, I went to speak but nothing came out. Could I still talk? I'm pretty sure I could! I hope I could!
“I’m Mike, remember?” His eyes fixed on to my face.
'BEEP.'
I tried to say Austin but I could only mouth it.
“Oh, Austin, he’s waiting for you at the garden, he wants to welcome you home, I guess? How about we sneak out of here to see him and let him know you're okay and awake, don't worry you’ll be back before anyone comes to check on you?” Mike patted my hand.
