"First Day"

When Sapphire was a girl she thought love was like seeing the world brighter. Life wasn't full without love because love gave people a color that was too beautiful to describe. Without it the world is dull and lackluster, everything following the same variant shades of brown. It was all darker and calmer. Some people preferred it that way, a life without brightness and excitement. Sapphire wasn't one of those people.

She wanted all the colors, but she no longer believed in love. She didn't understand how people saw the color. She wondered if some people had seen it but lost it after heartbreak. She felt like her mom was one of those people. She felt comfortable in the dull embrace of the world. She took advantage of the stillness and held it close. Her brother was like her when she was younger. He searched for the color everyday and never seemed to give up on it.

Sapphire gave up on the color, especially after summer when everything seemed to get so much more dull. The world was anything but a bright place with excitement. In fact, it was boring, long, and nothing short of terrifying.

Despite the way the world looked, school was her escape. For Sapphire the day was a breath of fresh air, a complete relief. She was finally able to leave her home without having to explain why. Despite feeling happy about this, she also felt like the wind was knocked out of her and she couldn't get her breath back. So much expectation came with this place that she was already nervous over what she was supposed to do. The colors at school were confusing. Like the dullness of outside tried to creep in and the colors inside were so close to touch but she could never really reach them.

As a sophomore she didn't expect much. Sophomore year was the forgotten year of high school. No one ever recalled on sophomore year, hell Sapphire didn't know Sophomores were a thing until she was in seventh grade.

Sapphire was taken out of her thoughts as her brother parked in his spot at school with ten minutes until the bell to spare. Rafael, Sapphires brother, was a junior and a relatively popular one at that. Sapphire wished she was like her brother, but after watching Rafael check himself out in the car mirror she questioned that notion.

"You're so weird." I judged as I plugged my headphones into my phone.

"It's finally time for me to hit it off with the ladies. I spent a lot of time trying to look good this summer and I'm not letting it go to waste." He bragged as he licked his fingers and rubbed them across his eyebrows.

"Wow." I sighed before putting on my headphones. I grabbed my bag and my skateboard and headed towards the school. As I skated in I listened to IDGAF by Dua Lipa. I needed something to make me feel confident on the first day.

I went past a few people I knew but most notable was Ricky and Big Red. I tutored Big Red in Math and English so I was pretty close with him already, and through him I met Ricky who I skated with with Big Red a few times over the summer. I skated by and waved at them with a smile. There were three main things I did every first day and the day wasn't complete until they were done. Saying hi to friends was  one of them.

As I walked down the halls listening to my music I made it to my locker. I smiled putting my stickers and magnets up. This of course was step one of the perfect first day. Most were of my favorite vines and just aesthetic pictures. With that was a picture of me and my best friend Seb.

While putting up the stickers I saw my brother walk over to a girl by her locker. The girl had dark curly hair and she seemed to be African American. She was cute and I was proud that Raf had taste at the least. I took off my headphones to hopefully hear what they said but all I could hear was the girl who seemed to be laughing at his joke.
