Robin pulled away and leaned back against the wall across from the lockers where they had had her pinned a few seconds ago. they tilted their head back, closing their eyes and smiling. for the first time sense Amelia had known them, they looked at peace. Robin started their way out the door, stopping to turn to her and gestured for her to follow them. Amelia didn't have a doubt in her mind as she followed them out the door. the two of them walked away from the school.
"where are we going?", asked Amelia. she also had to admit that walking out before asking this was stupid.
"i don't know, sorry. i was just thinking we could hang out and stuff, or we could do something if you want to", said Robin getting progressively more anxious as they spoke, Amelia thought that it was pretty cute.
"well, wanna go get some food?", asked Amilia with a giggle.
"Yeah but i don't really have any money", answered Robin quietly.
"its ok, I'll pay", said Amelia.
"oh no, please don't" said Robin, they clearly didn't want to bother her.
"shut up, I'm buying you food", said Amelia, the sudden swearing surprised Robin.
a bit later when the two teens sat in a café, they were talking about D&D which turned out to be one of their many shared interests.
Robin was like a whole different person, they were still a bit distant but all the aggression they had radiated before was gone. Amelia could tell that the person in front of her had a story, a story that had left them with many emotional scars and shields to hide them, but Amelia had already seen behind one shield and she had a feeling that she would soon see behind many more.
Her thought was interrupted by the arrival of the food. Robin had ordered a burger and so had Amelia.
Robin started to look uncomfortable as they had eaten their food, Amelia guessed that it was because the dreaded bill would soon be arriving. When it did, Amelia was quick to pay, not wanting to make Robin feel bad.
They walked out of the cafe and started walking down the street. Amelia didn't know why but she felt a lot more comfortable around Robin than she had felt in a long time. the two of them walked down the suburban streets, between the white picket faces and the neatly painted family houses. the whole world was quiet and it felt like only the two of them existed. they looked like complete opposites yet they were so similar.
Amelia couldn't know what Robin had gone though, but she would have guessed that transphobia was involved. It was like the two of them were the same with only a few shifted aspects.
the calm was interrupted bu the sound of a text tone from Robin's phone, they checked it and swore under their breath when they saw what the message read.
"shit, i have to go pick up my siblings from daycare", said Robin, looking up, apologetically at Amelia.
"its fine I'll come with you", said Amelia cheerfully, trying to comfort Robin.
Robin smiled at her faintly. they changed direction towards the daycare.
the two teens arrived at a big white, one story house with a sign on the fence gate that read "happy bells daycare". Amelia decided to wait outside the gate as Robin went to fetch their siblings. the door to the house burst open when Robin had walked half way across the yard, two tiny children ran to Robin and jumped on them. one of the kids was a little boy who looked like a carbon copy of Robin, the other kid was a little girl who had blonder hair and paler skin but still shared a lot of facial features. They waved good bye to the day care lady who stood in the door and turned away from the house.
Robin picked up the girl and took the boys hand. Robin and the kids made their way out of the gate. the kids were screaming on top of each other and Robin was listening as well as they could. Robin's face was lit up with absolute joy at the sight of their siblings being so happy, Amelia was almost jealous.
When Robin got to Amelia's side, Amelia crouched down to greet the little boy. before she could say anything, the little boy spoke.
"Robin, who is the rainbow lady?", asked the boy, pointing at Amelia and looking up at Robin.
"oh right", said Robin fumbling a bit to collect themselves. Robin looked up to Amelia.
"Amelia, this is Kai and Sky, my twin younger siblings. Kai and Sky, this is Amelia my... um.... friend", Robin explained quickly.
"nice to meet you", said Sky happily while kai just squinted at her suspiciously.
Amelia just smiled at kai, he really was a copy of his older sibling.
the now four people started to walk along the streets, Amelia didn't know where she was at this point so she just stuck with Robin and hoped for the best. as they walked the streets, Amelia noticed that the houses became less idylllic, they became smaller and grungier. when the group finally stopped, it was outside a tiny one story, brick house. the kids ran though the door. Robin turned to Amelia.
"this is my house, but now that we dropped off my sis and bro, we can go somewhere else. if you want", said Robin, scratching the back of their head.
"no, no, I'm kinda curious about the rest of your family now, so, can we hang out in your room", asked Amelia.
"um, yeah sure", said Robin with a small smile.
