11 years later...
Jane was calmly sitting in the backyard, sipping lemonade and watching her precious daughter fly in circles, landing in front of her. Miley shook her wings making their feathers fly everywhere, one flew in Jane's lemonade. It made Jane laugh and Miley giggle.
>>You need to be more careful honey.<< said Jane.
>>I really should.<< smiled Miley.
Miley took a seat next to her mother and looked at the sky for a few minutes. It was cloudy, all she could see was gray. It was going to rain that's for sure but still...even the clouds were interesting and beautiful to her.
James and Jane never let her fly so high to reach them, fearing she might be seen. Miley understood why she was homeschooled and why they were living far from any city, deeper in forest.
She never complained about it. Her fear of being seen and then taken was as big as her parents' and yet, the curiosity of what's beyond her backyard was growing. Miley sighed lightly hoping her mother wouldn't hear but she did.
>>What's wrong honey?<< Jane asked, her attention now fully on her daughter.
>>I was just wondering...when will I be able to fly beyond the backyard? You and dad promised me that.<<
Jane knew she was going to have that talk with her at some point. She just didn't think it would be this soon.
>>Why would you want to leave? Is 500m too small for you now?<< Jane chuckled.
>>I'm curious about what's beyond the backyard fence and in the city...<< Miley's voice trailed off while saying those few words.
Jane took a sip of her lemonade and kept quiet for awhile. She was thinking about the situation. She and James can't lie to her about the world, after all, Miley was just curious. The fear was still with Jane after so many years of successful hiding.
As a mother, she didn't want to let Miley go but she can't possibly ban her own child to go outside. It was a big dilemma in her head. She had to talk to James about it. Finally, after a few seconds Jane sighed and looked at Miley.
>>I need to talk to James first okay?<<
Miley smiled widely and hugged her mother tightly.
>>It would be the best birthday present ever.<< she squealed.
>>About that... I have something for you.<<
Jane reached into her pocket and pulled out a small black box. She handed it to Miley. Opening it, Miley had a wide smile. It was a silver necklace which had a pendant of a white rose. Taking a closer look, she realised the necklace can open.
She opened it and inside was a picture of James and Jane holding Miley, while she was a baby, in their hands. Miley closed the necklace and proceeded to put it on.
>>Happy 17th birthday honey!<<
>>Thanks mom, I love it so much!<< Miley smiled once again and gave her mother a tight hug.
After breaking the hug a car honking could be heard. The two looked at each other and yelled "He's here!" in unison. Together they ran in the house through the sliding glass door which led right in their huge living room.
Running through the room and to the front door, they opened it in hurry and excitement. Opening the door, they were met with the face they dearly loved, the face of one and only, James.
>>Dad!<< Miley yelled and hugged him tight.
>>Hi sugar!<< he said and kissed Miley on the head, returning the hug.
>>Welcome home baby.<< Jane said and gave him a kiss.
>>It's great to be home, love.<< he said and kissed his wife once more.
>>Ew! Get a room!<< Miley said, throwing a pillow at the couple who just laughed.
They proceeded to make their way to the kitchen where Jane made delicious lunch. Even if they were wealthy, Jane never liked to have someone do chores and/or cook instead of her. On top of that, she didn't want anyone to know about Miley.
James understood her. After all, they would be hiring a stranger and who knows what they would do if they saw Miley. It was a too big of a risk and Jane loved cooking and cleaning.
>>Smells delicious!<< said Miley as soon as the smell filled her nostrils.
>>Just wait until you try it!<< Jane exclaimed excitingly.
The family of three enjoyed the delicious meal. Miley was a bit anxious about the answer her father would give. The two ladies exchanged a couple of looks throughout the dinner.
Jane always had situations under her control, this one wasn't going to be any different. So Miley thought. Her mother's looks were calm and confident which calmed her down but not completely.
After lunch, Miley went up to her room and sat on her bed. She took a magazine to read, wanting to distract herself from the whole going out thing. Ten minutes pass when suddenly she heard her father's voice yell "what".
At this moment, Miley's heart began racing. She got out of her bed and paced back and fourth, shaking her wings more and more. Once everything went silent, it felt as if her heart dropped to her stomach.
She heard footsteps coming to her room. As the doors were opening, she wrapped her wings around herself and braced for a disaster that was bound to happen. Looking at her parents, she noticed something odd.
They were smiling lightly. Whenever they smiled, good news would be heard. Miley's heart began racing again. Jane nudged James and he cleared his throat and sighed.
>>We did promise you...and my answer is yes. You may go out tonight.<<
Miley's eyes went wide. She didn't expect that answer. Before her father could say anything else, she hugged him tightly.
>>Thank you dad.<<
James broke the hug and looked at his precious daughter who had a huge smile plastered across her face. He couldn't help but smile himself.
>>We do have a few rules, okay?<<
Miley nodded without losing the smile. She was happy she could finally see the city she dreamed about for so long. The only times she could see city lights was through Google and that wasn't exciting.
>>Be above the city at all times; if you must rest, it should be on a roof of a building; be back in your room before dawn; no risks; do not let anyone see you and for the last rule...have fun.<<
James forced a smile on his face. He was really concerned about Miley but he couldn't show it. Otherwise Miley would feel guilty and not go. As much as that sounded good, he would never forgive himself for doing that.
He kissed his daughter's head gently and hugged her.
>>Now go to bed and rest, we'll call you when it's time.<<
With that, Jane and James exited Miley's room. Miley immediately listened to her parents and jumped right in the bed, falling asleep quite quickly awaiting the dark.
