Cinder

I sigh as for the 18th time today I screw up on a coffee. I know I'm just training but I'm pretty sure if I keep this up I'm going to get fired and kicked out. If I'm not messing up on mixing them, I'm dropping them. Lily finds it absolutely amusing though.

I wipe my hands on my apron after I dump the broken pieces of the cup in the trash.

Lily laughs in a high and mighty way, "Like you know you can't keep a job here with that kind of performance."

I huff as I cast a glare her way, "yeah well maybe if you weren't lazy and would actually train me like you're supposed to, I wouldn't keep screwing up."

She snorts, "Like is actually train you! I'm not going to have a little tramp like you trying to steal my Julian away."

I roll my eyes, "first thing, I can't steal someone who isn't yours. Second, I'm not interested."

I walk past her and she growls, "I'll have you know what me and Julian have is magical!"

"More like delusional," I say under my breath as I get back to trying to learn how to make the fancy coffees.

After half a day I finally have mostly everything down. It took a lot but I know have some confidence in what I make.

"Here you go sir," I say sitting down a cup on a table in front of a customer.

He grabs it and takes a sip, "this is perfect! Good job."

I smile and bow, "thank you sir! I'm still learning though."

He chuckles, "such a polite young lady. How'd you end up working for Julian?"

I smile and scratch my forehead, "I'm new in town and he's helping me out."

"Oh my," he says, "that's unusual for him. He's normally very cold towards people."

"That's because most people are annoying and/or judgmental," a new voice responds. "And I don't really have time for annoying judgy people."

I look over at none other then Julian and smile, "Mr. Julian, hi! How was your trip?"

He shrugs and flashes me a small smile, "it was alright. I got some things for your apartment though."

My eyes widen, "you didn't have to do that! I don't even know how long I will be staying."

He waves his hand at me dismissively, "don't worry about that. How's your training going?"

Before I can answer him someone else shouts out, "Julian!" Lily races over to us, "Your here finally!"

He sighs and ignores her, "as I was saying, your training?"

"Oh her?" Lily says with a scoff, "she completely sucks at this! I've tried everything to get her used to it but she just doesn't know how to do this or just doesn't want to."

I look at her in disbelief, "you wouldn't teach me anything! I've had to learn all on my own! And I've got most of it mastered now."

The man pipes in holding up his coffee, "I can vouch for the new barista."

Julian sighs and then casts me a smile, "someone actually does they're job. Thank you." He then begins to have a slight conversation with the man.

Lily glares at me before pointing her nail filer at me and whispers to me, "listen here newbie, I'm tired of you embarrassing me in front of Julian. If you cross me again, I'll make you sorry."

I hold my head high, finally fed up with her, "You shouldn't threaten someone you know nothing about. The last people who bullied me, are probably still having to be put back together. Look up Cinder Elise Mayflower." I cast a glance to the man I served who is looking at me with a raised eyebrow. "Have a great day sir, if you need anything else please let me know." I bow and see that Julian is looking at me curiously and Lily just has a look of horror on her face. I walk back to the bar not casting another glance their way.

The rest of the day went smoothly, Lily avoided me the rest of the time. I wonder if she actually looked me up. I had no more mess ups and anything I didn't understand Julian showed me what to do. He never brought up what I said to Lily thankfully. I was sure with that I was surely going to be fired, but luckily he just acts the same as he was.

Maybe this won't be to bad after all. Surely going to the school of killers will go just as smoothly, right?

It turns out that Julian had gotten pillows and blankets for me. At least it'll be a bit more comfortable in the apartment now. I settle in for bed and stare at the ceiling until I fall asleep.
