"Nervous?" Tina asked, looking more nervous than me.
"No." I said unconvincingly
"Really??" Tina asked, predictably unconvinced.
"No. Of course I'm freaking nervous! I can barely sing in front of you let alone sing to try and earn a place in some club which is supposedly some kind of paradise according to my delusional asian best friend." I replied teasingly with a smile.
"Shut up!" She said back laughing, before adding with a smile, "and don't be racist! Not all Asians are delusional you know!" Her face was serious now. "Do you remember the words?"
"How could i forget them? you've made me go over them just about a million times!"
It took us until 9:00pm after school on the day when i decided to join up, to pick the song. In the end we settled on "how to save a life" by The Fray. It was my favourite song, it was very powerful and emotional, and most of all meant something to me as it reminded me of my dad. It's not like he died or anything, but I felt like it was my fault, and I could've helped him out but I didn't.
"And you can thank me for that! At least you wont forget the words."
I grabbed her by the shoulders "thank you T"
"You're welcome. Don't be nervous okay? You're gonna kill it!"
i took a deep breath "okay thanks T, i think I'm ready."
"ANNIE?" Mr Schue's voice boomed across the auditorium.
"I take that back! Holy crap T I'm gonna freaking die out there oh god! I cant go on!"
"Yes you can you got this! Now go there and show them what you got!"
"ANNIE KIMBERLEY-BROOKS?"
"Oh crap. Okay T here goes nothing wish me luck!"
"Good luck, go on they're gonna love you!"
I somehow got my unstable, trembling legs to walk themselves across the stage and towards the microphone. I couldn't look up, my eyes were focused on the dark wooden floor. It was a huge room, but it was dark, thankfully. The only light was the light of the extremely bright spotlight which was now fixed on me. I stuttered out "hello. My names's Annie Kimberley-Brooks and I'm here to audition to be in glee club."
A slight chuckle rang through the microphone as mr Schue said "alright Annie show us what you got."The intro to the song started and my nerves got worse. I clung onto the microphone, it was a wonder i didn't fall over. I closed my eyes and everything faded away as i started to sing. The words came out, but i wasn't aware i was singing them. It was all over in what seemed like seconds. I had done it! And it felt amazing. The adrenaline and passion had taken over me and i wasn't even aware what i was doing for most of the song. I open my eyes as applause and cheers ring through the auditorium. Wait... Cheers?? It wasn't only mr Schue in here! I could here female cheers, my eyes adjusted and i saw that there was indeed more people watching me on the stage. I could see that Tina had gone to sit in the seats. I could also see Quinn, Mercedes, Artie, Kurt, Rachel... Santana! They were on their feet, cheering for me! Santana! Cheering! For me! I felt something on my cheeks and realised that the song had gotten to me and i had a lone tear on my cheek. I looked to the ground and wiped it away with a giggle. The applause died down and mr Schue's voice boomed around the auditorium "wow! Just, wow! That was beautiful! Moving in fact. I saw you really felt the song, kurt certainly felt it too."
I looked over at kurt, the undoubtably boldest and most fashionable boy in the whole of lima, he was also the only openly gay kid at mckinley. He got a lot of grief for it but i admired him grately for his bravery. I saw him wiping away his tears next to Rachel berry, the most undoubtably annoying and un-fashionable jewish girl in lima. Who was doing the same.
"We'll get back to you. Very well done for that performance. It was one of the best auditions I've ever seen. Welcome to the new directions!"
I looked down, overwhelmed by it all, "wow thank you!" I looked back "thank you so much!" I turned back around to walk off the stage, not without catching a glimpse of Santana looking at me with a strange look on her face. She bit her lip then did a half smile thing which looked as though she was proud and happy, but also sad and troubled. The look went quickly from her face as i quickly rushed off the stage, and it was once again replaced by her usual bitchy smirk.
