"Seventh wonder, twelve o'clock," Hank announced.
Up ahead was a huge pyramid, surrounded by currents of floating debris. It was both amazing and terrifying, but I didn't show my small amount of fear.
Jean looked panicked. "He has the Professor in the center of the pyramid. He's going to transfer his consciousness into the Professor. If he does that, he'll have the power to control every mind in the world." I definitely didn't like this Apocalypse guy now. And I was deathly afraid of a world where we failed to stop him.
A world full of people like my father. And me. I shivered.
We went around the pyramid, and in front of us was an enormous sphere of debris forming a protective barrier around someone.
"What the hell is that?" Moira questioned in awe.
"It's Erik." The answer came from Raven. He was obviously a very powerful mutant. Really, everyone I was dealing with, friend or foe, was.
I felt a gush of wind next to me, and suddenly Peter was standing next to the pilot's seat.
Raven gave us different tasks. She and Peter were going to talk to Erik. Apparently Peter came here for him in the first place. The rest of us were charged with helping Kurt to get into the pyramid so he could get the Professor out.
As we were splitting up, Raven gave the last of her orders. "Hank, you go with the kids." I wasn't a kid. "Moira will be waiting on the plane."
"Wait!" Scott called out.
"What?"
"Not all of us can fully control our powers."
She huffed. "Then don't! You need to embrace them. We all do." And with that, her appearance changed drastically. Her dirty blond hair turned orange, short and slicked back while her skin became blue and her eyes a piercing yellow. It seemed there were a lot of blue mutants on this team.
Raven and Peter left, and we found a supposedly clear entrance to the pyramid. Clear, until a winged figure dived down and threw metal spikes at us. Luckily, Jean blocked them using her telekinesis. Now that he was closer, I could see his wings were actually made of metal and razor-sharp. Meanwhile, Kurt teleported inside the pyramid.
Angel noticed this and started flying towards the entrance. Hank gave me a look, and I kicked off the ground after him. I'd flown plenty of times, but I'd never actually had to fight mid-air. I kicked Angel away from the entryway, and barely dodged the spikes coming at me. He snarled and charged. He tried grabbing my ankles, but I skirted away from him at the last second and kicked him from behind, making him lose his balance and for a hopeful second, he toppled towards the ground. Unfortunately, he stabilized himself and rushed towards me once more. We fought back and forth for a while and I dodged most of his attacks, but he got impatient and managed to throw me into a wall. I heard a loud crack, and suddenly I couldn't move my left wing. He gave me one last look of disgust and flew off towards the pyramid as I plunged towards the ground.
During my fight with Angel, Jean, Scott and Hank got into a fight with two other horsemen, so they couldn't help me. "No!" Jean shouted, realizing the body sliding down the side of a broken building was mine, not Angel's. She was forced to dodge a lightning bolt, sent by one of the girls they were fighting. The other girl had some kind of laser sword, I couldn't see very well from my tricky position.
I tried slowing my fall with my other wing, my only accomplishment being ripping out several black feathers, exposing raw pink flesh. I desperately clawed at the wall, but it was no use. I landed with a hard thud on a pile of rubble, and thanks to Jean's influence over my brain, I didn't feel anything. I knew better than to try to move, though.
I felt horrible. Useless. I'd never lost a fight against an enemy before. Never. I barely lasted a couple of minutes. I almost wanted to cry. But I didn't. What would my handlers do? No, I didn't have a handler anymore. I was my own person now. Was I?
I carefully sat up, letting my numb wing drag beside me. I thankfully didn't break my spine, and I assumed it was because I landed on my wings, sort of. Again, I couldn't feel any pain, but I noticed my right ankle swelling up rapidly and turning an ugly shade of purple, as well as a growing pain in my side.
I couldn't do anything for now, so I observed the scene in front of me. Laser-Girl was strangling Hank with a laser whip, but he fortunately flipped on his back and tossed her away. Angel had dragged Kurt back outside, but Kurt trapped him in a makeshift cage of rubble and disappeared. I couldn't see Jean, Raven or Peter.
Scott shot his lasers towards Lightning-Girl, who sent lightning bolts back in return. All of a sudden, Kurt appeared next to him and they both disappeared right before the lightning would've got to them. Next was Hank, and I wondered if they would bother coming back for me. I was of no use to them now anyway. I accepted my fate and leaned my head back onto the hard concrete wall, closing my eyes.
A puff of blue smoke startled me. "Oh man, I really hate that guy," said a voice next to me, laced with a heavy German accent. He carefully but quickly picked me up and suddenly we were on the plane. And I felt nauseous. He placed me into a seat, and I had just enough time to notice the bald man laying on the floor before people surrounded me.
"Oh my God, what happened? Poor you, we're so sorry," Scott started. I had a sudden rush of unethical feelings for him. I didn't want his pity. I wanted to kill the damn person who made me lose a fight for the first time in 2 decades.
"You did a great job even if you lost. By the time Angel got to him, Kurt had located the center of the pyramid, he just had to teleport there once he was done with Angel." I was starting to maybe... like Jean a bit. Maybe not like, but I preferred her over the others. She knew exactly what to say (because she was in my head, but that wasn't the important part).
Kurt stayed back, not sure what to say without being murdered once I was better. I guess I was that scary.
I looked at him for a moment, then nodded slightly. "Thank you," I croaked.
His eyes widened in surprise. "Y-you're welcome."
Barely a minute after takeoff, there was a loud thud on the roof.
