That evening, I was bouncing an old tennis ball I found on the school grounds against the wall—thinking about the different favours of pizza I hadn't tried yet—when my peace was disturbed by Jean walking loudly into our room.
"Alright, get your off your ass and come here," she said, motioning me over as she opened her closet doors.
Confused, I complied and slowly made my way over to her, nearly knocking a lamp over in the process.
Every time, that stupid lamp, I thought irritably. I should just shoot it.
"Tomorrow we are going to the mall, and you aren't going to be wearing that. So, until you get more clothes, you can borrow mine," Jean announced, showing me the selection of clothes she had to offer in her small closet.
I had several questions. First of all, "What is the mall?" I asked as the door opened once more, revealing Ororo and Jubilee. Immediately, my first reaction was to get into a fighting stance and grab the knife under my pillow, but seeing that Jean was perfectly calm, I restrained myself. Instead, I stood straighter and backed away slightly. She was obviously expecting them.
I'd had very few, small conversations with Ororo, but never with Jubilee, so her voice took me even more by surprise. "You're joking, right?"
I waited for someone to respond until I realized she was talking to me. "Huh?" I said stupidly, not knowing why she thought I was joking. I had the sense of humour of a concrete floor. Jean snorted.
Jubilee kept looking at me weirdly. Ororo spoke up this time. "She is just surprised you do not know what a mall is," she explained.
I nodded. There was an awkward silence and nobody was answering my question, so I asked it again. "What is the mall?"
"Oh, uh, the mall is a place where people go shopping. There are a lot of different stores, so you can buy a bunch of things without having to travel to ten different places," Jubilee clarified, apparently still shocked by my lack of common knowledge.
Jean clapped her hands together. "Alright, now that that's out of the way we can get started. I asked the girls to come here so that we can all help you chose an outfit for tomorrow. Plus, you guys can get to know each other better in the process."
I stared at her. "Why do we need four people to choose clothes? I don't even want to go."
She didn't falter. "Because you have a no fashion sense and tomorrow is your first time out in the real world!"
"Plus, it will be fun," Ororo added.
I still didn't want to go, but I was also too tired to argue. The girls apparently expected me to agree anyway, because they were already rummaging through Jean's closet and... bags?
Oh.
Jubilee and Ororo brought some of their clothes too. The more they emptied the bags, the more I realized how much there was for me to try on.
This was going to take all night!
It's not like you sleep anyway, the little voice inside my head pointed out.

Finally, after hours of trying various combinations of shirts and pants on, I managed to convince the girls to let me wear a nice pair of high-waisted jeans and a black t-shirt, as long as I let them do my hair and 'makeup' in the morning. I wasn't sure what that meant but agreed to it nonetheless.
They made me tuck in the shirt, and to my dismay, my brace didn't show underneath, so I had no excuse not to wear it like that. Looking in the mirror, I felt utterly ridiculous. I'd seen other students dressed like this, but on me, it just looked... Wrong.
