July 2016

"Meow."
"This is incredible!" Terri shrieked, getting up for a closer look.
"No, it's not incredible!" Shad countered, watching his best friend continue to freak out and mew. All three of Shad's eyes were narrowed with panic and concern. "How do we fix him? How do we fix me?" He had had the third eye for ten hours the day before. It had returned shortly after Omi left to tell Bill about the changeling situation.
Mac put his heavy hands on the boy's shoulders. "It's going to be alright."
"But what's happening to us?"
"These things could be an affect of the quafly," Tell remarked from her seat in the corner. "Perhaps random events happen to those exposed. We should assume they're temporary, for our own sanity. Though... Shad's event has recurred."
Shad groaned. "Oh, I wish Dan were still here. He'd know what to do. He always did."
"Well, Dan has a family," Tella reminded him gently. "We have to respect the decision he made. I know we'll miss him, in more ways than one, but we're all highly intelligent and courageous people. We don't depend on one member of the group. We work together. We protect each other and the people of Gravity Falls. It's what we do. We'll make it through this, just like we've made it through everything else."
Shad paced nervously. "Oh, I hope Sil's alright. I hope Omi comes back soon. I don't like this. I don't like this at all. What if this never goes away?" he yelped, pointing to his extra eye. "Even worse: what if it keeps coming back? I can't go to school like this! And him!" He pointed to Frigh. "My best friend's practically a cat!"
"You really should calm down," Tell said softly. "These things haven't been happening for very long yet. If we wait, they may just stop on their own."
Shad wailed. "It's even tearing up! It really is another eye! Ohhh..."
Terri shook her head. "Stop being so dramatic. It's not even that big a deal."
Shad turned on her. "You're one to talk! You're not under one of these crazy spells!"
"I'm back!" Omi's voice sounded from the door.
Shad slumped with relief. "Omi! You're a woman again!"
"Yeah, and thank God for that." She shuddered. "I felt disgusting. Men are gross."
"Gee, thanks," Frigh said, rolling his eyes. All eyes turned to him. He froze, realizing what had happened. "I... I can talk again."
Shad whooped, throwing his arms around the boy. "I thought you were gonna be stuck like that for good!"
Frigh eyed Shad's eye worriedly. "And you're sure you won't be?"
"I'd rather be stuck like this forever than have you meowing for the rest of your life!"
Omi smiled, falling into a chair. "And the bromance continues. Seriously, guys, you are my soap opera." She looked at him closely. "Uh-oh, your third eye is back?"
Frigh rolled his eyes. "Whatever. Can we just- OH MY GOSH!"
Sil practically materialized next to him, the same spot she'd disappeared from the night before. She blinked once, twice, looked around in confusion. The rest stood speechless. She had never showed so much expression on her face before.
"Sil, are you okay?" Tell rushed to her side, checking her over.
Sil blinked again, shaking her head, as if clearing a thought. "What's the matter? Why are you all looking at me like that?"
"Because you've been missing for hours!" Mac yelled. "Are you seriously not aware?"
"...I suppose not. Are you sure?"
"Sil," Shad said. "We're completely serious. You vanished."
"Vanished." Her eyes became far away. "I don't feel like I ever left this spot. It only became a bit hazy a minute ago."
"What are we going to do?" Shad groaned. "We're falling apart." He looked at Omi. "Tell me the visit went well, at least."
"Well..." Omi grew sheepish. "We actually have a problem."
Sil straightened. "Problem?"
"The changeling's brother resides with Bill as a ghost."
"What?" Tell leaned closer. "The boy still exists?"
Omi nodded. "Yes. He's incredibly adamant about us doing anything to harm his brother. They made some good points. I've given Bill the chance to resolve this on his own, but if nothing can be done soon enough, we'll step in then." Her face grew stern. "But I gave my word I would do what I could to keep his brother safe. He may be a changeling, but he has a human family. We could cause more hurt than safety by doing anything. So let's just give it a week or so. I trust that Bill loves his friend enough to figure this out on his own."
"Then that's out of our concern for a while," Sil said nonchalantly. "It's not like we were too keen on saving Bill in the first place. And the other humans with him should be pretty safe concerning this situation. We can leave it be for a short while, I suppose."
"Did he tell you anything about what's happening to us? Does he know?" Frigh asked uncertainly.
Sil flashed the boy a look. "Omi wasn't to say anything about that. We can help ourselves."
Frigh shrunk back. "I know, I know, but I was just wondering if he said anything without her prompting? Just on his own?"
Omi nodded. "Yes. He said they are an after effect of the quafly. He- He and his friends have been going through these pulses as well, it seems."
"Did he say how to stop them?"
"I don't think he knows."
Shad cried out in despair.
Sil stood to her feet, her usually apathetic face twisted in slight annoyance. "Bear it, Shad, can't you? Moaning won't get you anywhere, and it's certainly not doing any good for our consciences."
Mac stood at that, frustration and anger in his eyes. "Lay off, Sil, he's only a boy." He spread his arms in distress. "They're all children! They deserve to be frightened, to cry!"
Sil's gaze grew steely. "Age doesn't exist here, Mac. Not until thirty. You know that. They stopped being children the moment they walked into the Society."
"Just because that's how you've always felt does not mean everyone's felt the same way!"
"You let your emotions get in the way of your work."
"Well, at least I have emotions!"
"Mac!" Omi reprimanded. "Stop."
Sil, her expression the same, sat back down. She took a deep breath. "I know this isn't easy work. I know that some of you wonder sometimes what life would be like had you never been here. You try to hide it, but I know. I know I may not feel the same as you do. I've pushed away anything for too long, because I felt that was right." She looked at Mac, her eyes softening. "But right now, we need to look past that and work together. That's the only way we'll get through this. Are you ready to do that?"
Mac nodded. "I am."
And the rest of them added their agreements.
