"I feel like we met a long time ago, Merrily," Yule remarked as they sat together on a park bench one lovely spring morning.
"You think so? Well, you lived here until... when was it?"
"We moves away when I was six, then came back when I was... fourteen."
"Let's see, then. Where would our paths have crossed? Certainly not in school or anything. I was much older than you back then."
Yule's eyes lit up. "That's right! You would have been, what, five years older than me? Just a little older than Tyler..." Recognition flew into his gaze. "Oh. Oh my gosh. You were the girl at the hospital."
"The hospital..." Merrily lost herself in her mind, trying to wrack her brain for the time he was referring to. "When?"
"The day my dad died. My brother and I were crying in the corridor in the ICU and a girl started talking to us."
"...Yule, that was you? Oh my gosh, I had completely forgotten about that." She squealed. "Oh, Yule, you were so small and cute! Ahh, little Yule, little Yule!"
Yule's cheeks flushed. "Aw, not fair! I never got to meet little Merrily! It's not my fault that I was born five years later than you."
"Nope." Merrily smiled lovingly. "I just got lucky."
"Well, you're lucky that I like the way you are now," Yule huffed jokingly.
"I'm lucky? Yule, you're the ghost!"
Yule laughed. Merrily couldn't help joining in. "Merrily, I am so lucky to have you! You win. You're right."
"I love you."
"I love you, too."
Merrily smiled contentedly, leaning back against the park bench. "What did you think of me that day, Yule?"
"I honestly don't remember all of it," Yule confessed, looking up at the sky. "I mean, it was one of the worst days of my life, but I was really young. I remember Tyler explaining to me what death was. He wasn't the gentlest about it, not until after you came and scolded him. I just remember wanting a source of comfort, and with Tyler in a rage before he came around, you were the closest thing."
Merrily sighed. "I wish I had known you after that. If you hadn't moved away... maybe I at least could've made a friend to your brother. I know he struggled a lot. I could've helped him. My parents could've. We would've been able to keep his secret, or help him share it. Of all places, Gravity Falls would have been the best place for him to grow up."
Yule frowned. "You're probably right, but it wasn't our choice. But also, it may have been better to get away for some years. Our dad died here. Our house brought back too many memories. It hurt us. It hurt Mom most of all."
"But you came back."
Yule's smile returned. "Yes, we came back. I guess Gravity Falls was always the best place for us, bad memories or not. I think the problem was... all we saw were the bad memories back then. After we moved... we recognized the good memories."
Merrily nodded. "Yule, you're one of my best memories."
"Memories, huh?" Yule remarked with a smile. "I'm still here, aren't I?"
"Yes, you are." Merrily reached out and put her hand over Yule's. She watched it fall through, as if her hand was inside the illusion of his. "I wish I could hold your hand."
Yule took his hand back and made it rest over hers. "I wish that, too. I'm sorry."
"Don't be. You being here is always enough for me."
"Is it actually?"
"Yes. It always has been."
"Then, Merrily," Yule said after a deep breath, standing so he could face his girlfriend, "can I ask you something?"
Merrily laughed a little, confused. "Y-Yeah?"
"Oh my gosh, this is gonna sound so dumb," Yule mumbled softly, hiding his face. He let his hands fall to his sides when he looked back at Merrily. His hands were squeezing into fists. "Look, love. It's been a few years. And they've been the best few years of my life. Well, er, afterlife, but I- I just wanted to say... We're literally living to be with each other, aren't we? I can't believe our situations worked out in this way- this way that I can be with you! That already sounds permanent enough to me. Now, I don't know if this will change much between us, but I just feel like it will. I don't want to be your boyfriend anymore, Merrily. I want to be your husband. So please." He dropped to a knee and gazed up at her with starry eyes. "Will you marry me?"
Merrily looked down at him, shock evident across her face. "Really?"
His smile wavered. "This is what you want, too, right?"
She nodded, tears filling her eyes. "Yes! Yes! It is what I want. I will marry you, Yule. Nothing would make me happier."
A wide smile broke across his face. "You will?!"
"Always and always."
He stood up and leaned down to kiss her. "Thank you." After what seemed like an eternity of gazing down at his now fiancée, a thought came to mind, and he stepped back and laughed. "I bet you're wondering about a ring, huh?"
Merrily smiled and shrugged. "I can't expect anything. How would you get a ring, Yule?"
His eyes gleamed. "Steal."
Merrily burst into laughter. "Yeah, right! You would never! And anyway, it really isn't necessary."
Yule slumped. "I wish I could do it for you. I wish I had money, or a means of- well, anything! I'm sorry."
Merrily shook her head, eyes softening. "You don't have to be sorry for anything. You're here. That's enough. And if it means that much to you, we can afford something inexpensive."
"It's not the same."
"We're not the same. We're bound to have a lot of differences from other relationships, love."
Yule's heart melted. "I really don't know how I got so fortunate to call you mine." And he kissed her once more.

He called his best friend later that day. "Biiiiiiiiiill!"
"Why are you saying my name like that? What did you do?"
"Guess! Guess what! You'll never guess!"
"If I'll never guess, tell me! Ugh, you're exasperating! How does Merrily deal with you?"
Yule laughed giddily. "She's about to be dealing with me for a lot longer!"
There was stunned silence from Bill's end. "...No. You didn't."
"I did!"
Bill whooped. "YULE! Congratulations! She said yes?"
"Yeah, she did!"
"Look at you, an engaged man!"
"I- I'm just so ha-happy!"
"Dude, are you crying?"
"Ye-e-e-e-es!"
"Aw, Yuuule."
Yule took a few breaths and dried his tears. "Speaking of proposals, have you got any plans for the near future, man? I mean, Dipper and Pacifica are already long and gone on the marriage train."
Bill sighed. "You're making me look bad!"
"No offense meant."
"Okay... Look, I think it'll happen someday. Just maybe not yet. Mabel's on the same page, too. It's a big commitment. There's still so much to do, to see, to discover about ourselves. Someday we'll be financially stable and we'll be ready to take that next step, but I don't think that's the plan for us yet. I'm glad for Pacifica and Dipper and that that worked for them, but every relationship's different."
"Especially mine."
He laughed. "Especially yours, dude."
