October 2032

Sebastian Redd was on his way walking home from school one autumn afternoon, his siblings already gone ahead, as he liked to take his time, taking in the Oregon scenery and senses of fall. He was enjoying another blissful day when he rounded the corner and ran straight into another person, knocking him backward onto the ground.
"Oh my goodness, I'm so sorry!" exclaimed a surprised feminine voice. He looked up to see a girl, perhaps a few years older than him, her hair pulled up, with dark ebony skin that shimmered a beautiful shade of blue. He wondered if she had her hands on some of his father's potions. He did have a few customers. The girl reached her hand down to help him stand. "I should've been watching where I was going! Are you okay?"
"I'm fine! Don't worry about me. You?"
"Fine, fine! I'm so sorry! I was just out for a look around town and got too distracted, I guess."
"Oh, you're new around here?"
"Yes, I moved in just a few days ago."
"That's cool! Do you maybe have an hour to spare? I could show you to a coffee shop, maybe talk for a little while while you get to know the area?"
"Oh, like a date? That-" the girl smiled, "-that would actually be nice. Thank you!"
"Sure thing!" Sebastian smiled back. "My name's Sebastian, by the way. Everyone calls me Seb."
"Nice to meet you! I'm Freya."
They started walking toward the coffee shop, making small talk as they went. Once they had ordered and gotten settled, Freya exclaimed in delight, "I can't believe I found another Jinni here! I mean, this is Gravity Falls, so I guess I shouldn't be too surprised, but-"
"What are you talking about?" Seb asked with a confused laugh. "I'm not a... a Jinni, was it? Isn't that, like, a genie? Wait. Are you saying you're one?"
Freya gaped at him in horrified shock. "You're kidding. Then why the heck can your skin flush green?"
"My dad kinda brews potions. That's why my hair is blue, and my eyes are green, and my skin flushes green too."
Freya looked toward the door, as if she were considering making a run for it. "You can't tell anyone. About me. Or... yeah. I'm not supposed to be here. It'd be bad if people knew I was a Jinni."
"Woah, woah, woah," Seb laughed. "Calm down! I'm not gonna do anything to you! Seriously. I'm not oblivious and negligent like the rest of the people in this town. Honestly. One of my closest friends has a best friend who's half faerie. That friend of mine's brother is an ex-demon, who's best friend is a ghost, whose girlfriend is immortal, whose parents are monster hunters. Not to mention the ghost is brothers with the changeling who replaced the half faerie's father. Trust me. I know weird."
"O-Oh," Freya said, relaxing. "Okay. I just can't be too careful, you know? Especially around my own family. My parents would kill me if they found out I was on a date with a human. My brother brought a human girl home once, about sixteen years ago. My dad threatened to kill her."
Seb lept up from his seat so fast the chair fell over. The others in the cafe turned to stare. Freya laughed.
"I didn't finish yet! He didn't actually! She took advantage of him for a wish, but it was all a big misunderstanding-"
"Wait. I know this story," Seb cut in. "And then a boy materialized from the air and said he would die for the wish. The girl only took advantage of the boy Jinni because their friends were dying. The father Jinni gave the girl the wish, and threw the boy and girl out of the house when they mentioned they had a ghost haunting them. Then they went and got strawberry cake."
Freya gaped in astonishment. "How do you know all that?"
"Because that wish saved my life, too."
"What?"
"I know the girl and the boy. They're my friends. They're all grown up now. You see, many of us were afflicted by a type of curse. Myself included. I wouldn't have lasted much longer if they hadn't gotten that wish. Not unless the curse let up on its own, which was unlikely at the time."
"How old are you then?"
"I'm eighteen."
"Oh, cool. That's not so bad, then. I'm twenty-two."
"You look younger."
"Yeah, well, I only just had a birthday, and my sister got all the older-looking genes. In a good way. No offense to her," she added with a teasing snicker. "Off topic question: do you always wear your hair different colors? And your eyes and skin?"
"Yeah. I can't remember the last time I left it all natural."
"You should. For a little bit. Just to see what it looks like. What you really look like."
"You don't like it?" Seb asked, sounding hurt.
"No, no, it's not that at all! I think it's cute, actually! I was just surprised that even you don't know what you really look like, exactly."
"Oh, I guess you're right. Who knows? Maybe I will. Anyway," he put his elbows on the table and rested his chin in his hands, "can I have your number? I'd like to meet with you again."
Freya's eyebrows rose. "You're asking me out again?"
Seb felt himself flushing. "I mean, yeah. You're really pretty, honestly. And I've never had a date so easy and fun to talk with in- well, ever."
Freya set down her coffee cup. She had a sympathetic expression on her face. "You've had bad luck with romance, too?"
"Ugh, yeah," Seb groaned with an unenthused laugh. "I'm always getting dumped, or used, or cheated on, and they always find something wrong with me. That I'm too clingy, or I talk to much, or that I look much too strange."
"I know we don't know each other well yet, but I hope you can believe me when I say I will never use you or cheat on you. I'm sure you're not clingy. You're just looking for someone to love and keep, because no one has ever really loved you or wanted you for long, is that it? I think you talk just the right amount. And I love your sense of style."
"Ah, stop it, you're just saying that because I look like a Jinni."
"Not at all! I mean, you do, but I still meant it. And I meant all those other things, too."
Seb looked up uncertainly, expectantly. "Really?"
"Really." She scribbled something on a napkin and passed it to him. "My number. Text me later. I'd like to see you again soon. I just moved into an apartment down here. I'll be around. Just give me a call, okay?"
"Of course!" Seb exclaimed. "And if you ever need a tour around the area, or just a place to spend the day, let me know. My family would be happy to have you."
Freya smiled. Perhaps there was a kindred spirit or two for her in Gravity Falls.
