November 2016
"Brindle? What are you doing? It's the middle of the night." Florian walked into the kitchen after his wife, rubbing the sleep out of his eyes.
"I was hungry." Brindle explained, gathering up vegetables and placing them on the tabletop. "I thought I'd make some parsnip soup."
"At 3 a.m.?" Florian walked up behind her and hugged her around the waist, resting his chin on the top of her head. He put his hands over her pregnant belly and smiled. "Any day now, right?"
"Yes, flower," she answered just as warmly, putting her hands over his. "Any day."
"I can't wait to meet her."
"Or him."
Florian smiled. "Or him." He unwrapped himself from her and said, "Sit down. Rest. I'll make the soup for you."
"But I-" she stopped, wincing, drawing a hand to her belly. After a few seconds, she nodded. "Okay, I think I will."
"Are you alright?"
"Yes. It's just those practice contractions again."
"Is that normal?"
"The midwife said so."
"Then I guess I'll have to take her word for it," Florian deducted, turning back to the stove. He knelt, tucking some firewood underneath, then got to work lighting it.
"It's so surreal," Brindle breathed out. "I can feel it kick. It almost feels like little flutters." She gasped with delight. "Do you think our baby will have wings?"
Florian laughed. "I doubt it. Given that I'm practically human, and you don't have any, it's not that likely."
"Aww."
"Brighten up!" He began chopping the vegetables. "The child is going to be part faerie. If nothing else, we're going to have a beautiful baby on our hands. It will have little pointed ears, and an enchanting little voice. Perhaps our child will look very much like a faerie. Maybe with tree-colored skin, or maybe the color of a leaf. Maybe with a tail. Or maybe it will look very close to human. We're just going to have to wait and see."
"My grandmother had wings."
Florian laughed again. "Forget about the wings!"
Brindle took an intake of breath and drew a hand to her swollen belly. "Florian." She reached out her other hand and grabbed his own. She nestled it onto a place on the side of her belly.
Florian smiled, filling with warmth. "It's really moving around, huh? Wow. I can't believe that's really our child. We're going to be the best parents, Brindle."
She drew her hands to his face and pulled him forward for a kiss. "I can't wait." She pointed to the stove. "Now finish my soup!"
He grinned and hurried back. "Right away, my lady!"
As she watched her husband, worked, Brindle thought about how different he'd seemed in those last few months. It wasn't a bad different, but he seemed more hopeful and content than he had in the past.
He had always wondered about the human world, about Gravity Falls, and how different life could've been had he grown up there with people of his own kind. He envied his changeling.
But now... his eyes were happier. He was glad to be in Lightbrook. He had gotten some kind of closure by meeting Tyler, and through the promise of soon getting to meet his human mother.
It had been hard before. Brindle had spent every day trying to convince him that he did belong. Yes, he was different, but he wasn't the only one, and no one looked down on him for it. But his only comfort seemed to be that he was with her. And that was enough for the both of them.
But she was relieved that she could finally believe it was enough. That he was truly content.:::::::::::::::
December 2016"You were right. He does look very much like a human," Brindle remarked, gazing down at their newborn baby nestled in her arms. He had a head of soft, brown hair and small eyes that had yet to open.
"Not the ears," Florian noted, tapping them lightly. "They've positively pointy."
The two giggled and stared adoringly at their new child.
"No wings," Florian remarked with a laugh.
"It's okay," said Brindle, with so much love in her gaze, "he doesn't need any. He's perfect." She smiled and looked back up at her husband. "I want another one."
Florian's eyes bulged. "Another one? We've only had this one for an hour!"
Brindle hummed with contentment, gazing back down at their baby. "I didn't know I would love him this much. I would die for him."
"As would I, but please don't."
"I won't, darling. He needs a name."
"This is just a suggestion, we don't have to choose it, but... Can we name him Yule? Think of how happy that would make my human mother. Im finally going to meet her, and Yule was the son she lost. If I can bring any joy back to her, I want to do it." He gazed at the baby in wonder. "She's going to adore him."
"Yule... That's too human a name. It would stick out. We can't give him a name like that."
"But, Brindle..." Florian pouted.
"Oh, don't look at me like that... Fine. What if we name him Yule, but also give him a faerie name?"
"Like two first names?"
"Yes. Yule as one name, and what do you think the other should be?"
"Something like ours..."
"Perhaps Thistle? I really do like that name."
"Yule Thistle it is."
"Yule Thistle... look how precious you are."
The baby yawned and whimpered a bit, causing a dimple on his left cheek to appear. He nuzzled against his mother, who held him close. He was so tiny and warm. Her chest tightened with a love she had never known before.
"May I hold him again?" Florian asked, his voice barely more than a whisper.
"You don't have to ask, love. He's yours." Brindle carefully set the newborn in his arms. She watched her husband melt, and her heart swelled like she was falling in love all over again.
