September 2032

"So," he said, wiggling his eyebrows at her, "how are things with you and my brother?"
Sebastian and Rosanna sat on the couch after school, the television quietly playing in the background as they talked.
Rosanna pushed him playfully. "Seb!"
Seb's laugh dissolved into a gentle smile. He put his hand on Rosanna's shoulder. "No, really. I want to know how you guys are. Ash can get a little reserved, and I just like to check up on you. Make sure you're okay."
Rosanna's heart filled with warmth. "Thanks." She took a seat on the couch and Sebastian sat beside her. "We're good, I think. It's just..." She sighed. "It's hard to know what he's thinking sometimes. I wish he would open up more. I feel left in the dark at times. I think we're okay, and I love him, but sometimes, I just get the little question in the back of my head that wonders if he still loves me, too."
Seb slung an arm around her shoulders. "He does, Rose. My brother is a man of few words, but you can tell from the way he looks at you, the way he holds you, can't you? Every relationship is different. They don't all have to be filled with words. Some relationships take a short time to develop, like my mom and dad, and others take a much longer time, like Mabel and Bill. It's okay for you and Asher to have a quieter kind of relationship, as long as you are okay with that. If you're not, maybe you need to have a talk with him."
"Yeah, I guess you're right." Rosanna beamed at her friend. "You're gonna make a great boyfriend to someone someday, Seb."
He laughed. "You think? The blue hair usually throws people off." He examined Rosanna. "You should really accept our offer. I think you could look really nice with... Ooh! Scarlet hair!"
"I like to keep it natural. Also, my mom wouldn't like it."
"Well, we definitely want to keep Melody happy."
"Rose?" Their heads snapped in the direction of the gentler voice that had just entered the room. "I didn't know you were here."
"Hey, Aster! Speak of the devil!"
Asher's eyes grew confused. "You were talking about me?"
Rosanna smiled. "Just about where I'm taking you to eat tonight."
"Oh, no," he said, smiling back. "That can be my treat to you." He glared at his brother. "Snapdragon, have you been bothering her?"
"Not at all! She's all yours."
"You guys are so cute!" Tamryn's voice sounded from the stairs. Her bright pink hair was pulled back, and she leaned against the rail. "Dandy, come see them!"
Darcy poked her head in the stairwell. "Get out of their business, Tulip." She smiled at Rosanna, pushing her glasses up the bridge of her nose. "Hey, Rose."
"Hi, Darcy." She turned back to Asher. "Shall we go?"
He nodded and offered his arm to her.
"Ooh, such a gentleman!" Sebastian said in a high pitched voice.
Asher shot him a look. "Shut up, Seb."
The couple left the house arm in arm. The September Oregon air had already begun to cool, leaving a crisp note of approaching autumn in the air.
"I like you sweater," Asher remarked softly. "You look very cute."
Rosanna leaned her head against his shoulder. "Thank you. Mabel made it for me. I wanted this purple color because it reminds me of you." She ran her fingers through his royal purple hair. "Look, we match now."
He smiled, leaving a kiss on her cheek. "I suppose we do."
"Ash, can I ask you something?"
"Always."
Rosanna bit her lip, growing nervous. "Don't take any of this the wrong way. I just wanted to ask... Are we still okay? Us?"
His eyebrows knit together in confusion. "I don't understand."
"It's just that... It's wonderful that we have the kind of relationship where we understand each other and we don't have to talk. But sometimes... I don't know why it hasn't been working for me recently. Ash, I worry. I never know what you're thinking. I'm scared that... do you still love me?"
His eyes grew in shock and hurt. "Oh, Rose." He gathered her up in his arms, burying his face in her neck. "I'm so sorry. I'm sorry you ever thought that for a moment. I do love you, but there's never a good enough way to express it in words. I thought what I have been doing was enough to show you."
Rosanna sniffled. "It is, Asher. I'm sorry. I guess there's days when I just need to hear it. I'm sorry, that's pretty selfish of me."
He shook his head, never letting go. "It's not. Stop apologizing. I'll tell you as many times as you need to hear. I need you to know. I love you."
"I love you, too."
He kissed her on the nose, then cupped her face in his hands. His eyes shone. "Good. Don't ever be afraid to ask. Look, I may not initiate our conversations a lot, but I swear that never means anything more than that's just who I am. I'm a listener, and I could listen to your voice all day." He kissed her cheek next. "But I will talk if you need me to. I'll say that I love you, because I do, Rosanna, I do."
"No, just hearing you say all this now is more than enough." Rosanna clung to his arm. "You are enough. I don't know what came over me."
"Don't worry about it." He kissed her for real that time. Rosanna leant into the kiss, warmth tingling up her spine.
When they pulled away, Asher asked, "So, food?"
Rosanna grinned, moving her hand down to hold his. Their fingers intertwined. "Would I ever say no to that?"
He only smiled in response, leaning his head against hers. She was ever glad to be in that moment with him.
The following silence was enough.
