"Y.T.! Slow down! You know I'm not as fast as you!"
Y.T. snickered at the girl at his heels and stuck his tongue out at her. "Slowpoke!"
"Yule Thistle whatever-your-last-name-is, get back here!"
Y.T. sighed and slowed to a stop. The girl following him panted, her hands on her knees as she caught her breath. "Rosanna, we have to get there fast. It's not my fault you're human!"
"Well it's not your fault-" she gasped, "you're a faerie, either!" She sighed and glared at her best friend. "I used to be faster, you know. Remember? When we were little?"
"Because we were young, and you were older, therefore bigger! I still haven't quite grown yet, but you'll see! I've got time yet!"
They kept running until Y.T. slowed, eventually just stopping, causing Rosanna to almost run into him.
"I thought you said we had to go fast!" she huffed.
"Because it was fast! We lost it's trail. I can't see the smoke anymore. But I think it'll get bored and come to find us soon enough."
"I thought people were the ones running away from it."
"True, but I think it's a little scared of us. It knows we're a force to be reckoned with!"
"That's right! It's just a scampfire. We can do this!" Rosanna pumped her fist in the air. "We're the Mystery Mates! Rosanna and Y.T.! Probably the only pair of best friends who are also sleuths and protectors of their towns! The world is lucky to have us!"
"Yeah, it is!" Y.T. said, laughing. He fell on his back and looked up at the sky. "You know, Rosanna, I like that you call me Y.T."
"Why's that? It's your name."
"Yeah, but... everyone in Lightbrook calls me by my 'faerie name', Thistle, and everyone in Gravity Falls calls me by my 'human name', Yule. I was never supposed to have two names, actually. It was just supposed to be Yule. My father insisted. But Mom wanted a name that would fit in. So all of a sudden, my middle name came into play, and that's what everyone called me by. When I came here, I wanted things to be different with my name, so I went by my first. Now... I just feel like two different people. A name for each aspect of myself. I'm not fully fae. I'm not fully human. And yet, in both ways, I am. I don't know why I'm whining about this. I'm certainly not the only mixed species. There are people like me everywhere. My dad had it much worse than I do. And his changeling counterpart had it so, so much worse. I shouldn't complain. I'm lucky. I have everything I've ever wanted. I just wish I knew where I belonged. The choice is too much. I want to belong both places at once.
"When you call me Y.T., I feel like that's possible. I'm not just Yule. I'm not just Thistle. I'm me. I'm Yule Thistle. I'm Y.T.. So I guess I just wanted to say... thanks, Rosanna."
"I don't see why you have to choose," Rosanna said, putting a blade of grass between her lips and making it buzz. "You can belong to both places. You shouldn't have to leave behind one or the other."
He grinned. "Maybe you're right." He looked over. "Can you teach me to do the grass thing?"
"Oh, sure. All you have to-"
The snap of a branch caught their attention. Y.T. sat right up. "Did you hear that?"
The scampfire had creeped up on them and was only feet away.
"Shoot! There it is!" Rosanna squealed, crawling back as fast as she was able. "Y.T., don't let it jump on you!"
He sprung to his feet, much more lithely than she. "Don't worry about me! Let's get to the creek!"
They ran to the water, the creature on their heels, but as soon as they hit the stream, the scampfire stopped at the edge.
Y.T. kicked the water, splashing the creature on the bank. As the droplets hit it, it hissed and steamed, then ran away. Y.T. made a move to chase it, but Rosanna put a hand on his shoulder.
"Just leave it be. I don't think it will be going near anyone anytime soon." She cocked her head, looking after it. "It was kind of cute, don't you think? Putting aside the danger factor."
"Yeah, I guess so. Mission accomplished!" He beamed and they did their secret handshake they had been adding to for years. "Well, then, we've still got half a day left."
"Yeah! What do you wanna do?"
"Make flower crowns?"
"You always want to make flower crowns!"
He grinned. "Of course! And we've gotta take our opportunities! We won't have summer for much longer."
They plopped down in the grass again and got to work, even though most of the flowers in their vicinity were weeds.
Rosanna did a rough job. Her fingers seemed too big to make the right knots. And the patterns and colors were never as she quite expected them to turn out in the end.
Y.T., on the other hand, was an expert. His nimble fingers were weaving masters, and he somehow always found livelier, more colorful flowers to adorn his creations. He finished sooner than her, and crowned her as soon as he was done. "There you are! You're like a fae princess."
Finishing up her crown, Rosanna frowned. "Mine sucks."
Y.T. shook his head. "Does not! I love it!"
"I don't want you wearing this. That's embarrassing. Glamour it up for me, then it won't look so bad."
"You know glamour only lasts for an hour. And I think it looks fine. Go ahead! Crown me!"
She put the ring on his head, and he glowed, not only with happiness and pride, but with the undeniable prettiness of a fae child. "See? Looks fine, right?"
Rosanna reluctantly nodded. "That's only because you can pull off near about anything."
He smiled. "Hey, I heard there's a plaidypus near the Corduroy's house. Wanna go catch it and have it as our pet?"
"Do I!"
And they raced off to their next adventure.
