This week had been the worst week of my life. I lost both of the most important people in my life. Who could ever take that all in such a short time? And on top of that, I was pregnant with a murderer's child. How could I explain that to a child later in life?
Callum and I got coffee. I got tea, though. I heard coffee isn't good for you when you're pregnant, but not too sure. I'd rather be safe than sorry.
We sat down. Our silence was weird. How do you start such a difficult conversation? He was going to tell me about his dead wife.
"She got killed by a serial killer. This girl killed 15 people. And, sadly, my wife was one of them."
"Oh god. I'm so sorry, Callum."
"She was pregnant with our first kid. The baby was taken out of her. It was gruesome." I nodded. I didn't know how to respond to such a statement. "We were 20. We had been told so many times that it would never work, but we had never been happier. When I proposed when we were 18, our families weren't that supportive. But they grew and started being okay with the idea of it."
"That's awesome." I smiled a genuine smile. The fact that they fell in love so quickly was so perfect. It was like the most amazing love story. "God, that sounds perfect."
"It really was. The wedding was everything we had wished for." He smiled gleaming one. I could see his mind travel back in time to that very moment. "I think about it every day."
"That's the sweetest thing I've heard in a while."
"So, I know what you're going through. I lost my lover and best friend in one. And that's why I'm actually a detective. I wanted to find justice for those who were harmed. And their families as well."
"You're a really good guy." We both smiled at each other. I felt something. And I hated that. But something about that moment, it just made sense. I was vulnerable. I had lost everything. I had to have something that I gained. Maybe it was Callum.
I sipped my tea. We sat there and talked for hours. We talked for so long, they had to kick us out. But it was the happiest I had been in a while.
"Well, this really fun." His smile glowed in the moonlight. Him saying this made my smile glow as well. My cheeks became rosy. I was hoping he wouldn't notice. But, it was hard to not see them.
"That it was. This made my day a lot better, but I will probably still go home and cry. I'm so exhausted." He nodded.
"Understandable. Drive safe! I need you alive. I've never been able to tell someone this so easily." We said our goodbyes. I knew this was going to be interesting.
