Eva Jan walked down the airport exit. She could feel the butterflies swarm in her stomach. It was finally happening. She was starting over, completely. And she interpreted the bright sun warming her skin as a welcoming sign.
She walked around the pick-up area and watched as people mounted their luggage into taxis before taking off.
She looked for her roommate, Laura and soon enough she heard, "Seevali!"
She recognized the Spanish accent and turned around to be greeted by her roommate, Laura.
They'd been chatting for a few months leading up to move-in day but Eva was even more in awe at Laura's beauty in person.
"Laura? Hi!" Eva greeted and hugged Laura.
"Welcome to LA! You'll love it here. It's honestly a bit scary but you'll adjust." Laura said leading Eva to her car. Laura was very outgoing and Eva enjoyed that because she wasn't a conversationalist.
"Yes, I know. I was nervous all through the plane ride. And you know, you can call me Eva." Seevali responded, trying to fit her luggage in Laura's trunk.
"Oh, right. Your name is just so pretty. You're also very beautiful, wow. I'm so jealous." Laura gushed as they both got into the car.
"You're speaking nonsense." Eva laughed. "It's so amazing to finally meet you!"
"You too, I'm so excited!" Laura said and she kept rambling about how great LA was as they got into the car.
While Laura drove to the UCLA campus, Eva explained how chaotic the past 15 hours had been.
Despite all the excitement, she had never been so tired. All the excitement and anxiousness had taken a toll and she couldn't sleep in the plane because a couple wouldn't stop bickering a few seats ahead of her.
She regretted not investing in a good pair of headphones.
"The airports in Afghanistan are no joke. They are super busy, I honestly had no idea." She said while shaking my head.
"Plus, I thought it was hot in Afghanistan, oh wow. I seriously feel like I'm going to melt." Eva laughed.
"I can only imagine what you've gone through. When I came from Costa Rica, my parents made sure to hire a guardian to guide me through everything." Laura said. "I will tell you, though, LA is an experience. The food is great. There is so much culture. Oh! And the boys are so attractive." Laura smiled.
"Eh, I'm not too excited about boys at the moment," Eva said looking at my hands.
"Oh right, Ahmed. I forgot about him. I'm sorry." Laura said apologetically.
Eva had just broken up with her boyfriend, Ahmed. They dated for almost 4 years and were going to get engaged soon but then she got the grant from UCLA. He wasn't going to move to America with her so it was inevitable in her mind.
"It's fine. I do miss him. I feel bad, you know? But everything happens for a reason." She sighed looking at the palm trees they were passing.
She was simply too excited to be in LA to be even remotely sad. She was ready for the adventure and the fresh start. She liked Laura so being her roommate should be a fun experience. Not to mention, UCLA which was a great opportunity for her. She was ecstatic when she found out she had gotten the grant and she was definitely going to work hard to prove that she deserved it.
And who knows? Maybe she'd make time for a little LA love.
