Chapter 26 : Shattered Pieces of The Past

IT HAS BEEN TWO DAYS since Ares visited the manor. And it's been three days since Exene left. Given the duty of being the duchess, there's nothing much that changed, except that I have to wear a tiara all the time and the dresses are fancier compared to the normal ones I used to wear. I spent most of my time tending the plants in the greenhouse or making medicines in the lab.

I occasionally accept patients who would come to the manor. But most of the time, my clinic is usually occupied by Levi and Luca. Where they get the wounds and bruises everytime, I don't know.

"Where on earth did you get these wounds?" I said as I gently dabbed the swab on Luca's cheek. It has a brutal graze and from what I can see, I can tell it's a wound from a knife. It's still early in the morning and they're already beat up.

Napatingin ako kay Levi who is sipping his tea on the side. I already bandaged his arm and put an ointment on his cheek. It has a bruise.

"Were you two fighting?" I asked. They remained silent.

"I know you're paying too much attention to practicing your fighting skills but isn't this too much?" I said and continued to clean Luca's wound.

"I think we pissed Davis off too much," Levi said quietly as he looked outside the window. Napahinto ako.

"Davis did this to you?"

"It was our fault. I think we said something he didn't like." Levi said.

"That asshat is getting more and more sensitive these days. I wonder what's up with him." Luca clicked his tongue. I can imagine what happened. Luca and Davis must have been the one fighting and Levi was just caught in between.

"You shouldn't have talked about his family, Luc." Levi muttered.

I remember the first time I treated him, he talked something about family.

"What about his family? Did...did something happen to them?"

Levi sighed. "All we know is that his family was massacred. His mother and his siblings. Their house was burned down when he came home. None of his family were left alive."

I gasped. "What about his father?"

"He never had a father. At least that's what he said. Maybe he left them when they're too young, I don't know. He doesn't really talk much about his family. All I know is, he became an assassin to kill whoever killed his family years ago."

He does the Duke's dirty work. He's the spymaster. An assassin. Did he became one to avenge his family?

I suddenly remembered our conversation in the greenhouse when I asked him if he ever hurt someone without Exene's orders. And his answer was as clear as the day.

"Almost. But I remembered someone that stopped me from killing that person. And that she might want to meet him first before I kill him."

I didnt really pay much attention to it but for him to have that much hatred on someone, it only means he already found the person he's looking for. And he's hesitating to kill that man because he remembered someone. A woman. He wants that woman to meet that person first before he-

"You're spacing out, Lily."

I snapped back from my reverie when Luca spoke.

"Sorry," Pinagpatuloy ko ang paggamot sa sugat niya but my mind still wanders off to Davis. For some reason, he makes me worried about him.

The rooftop was dark and empty on a chilly night. I hugged the coat tighter. Tomorrow marks the fourth day I became the Duchess of this city. I came here to think since it's quiet but I was wrong.
